WHY GROW OLD? Blood Sugar Level Influences Appetite By JOSEPHINE LOWMAN Rcfblrr and Tribune Syndicate Modern research has brought us several sugges tions which are most helpful in taking the pain out of calorie counting. For instance, our appetite usually seems to be some what influenced by the level of our blood sugar. In other words when the blood sugar level fglls to what is called "the fasting level’’ we are apt to experience pangs of hun ger and to feel weak. Food raises the blood sugar level and tests have demon strated the fact that some foods hold the sugar level at a high point much longer than others. In more than one study it has been defin itely established that a high protein meal delays hunger pangs longer than one which is high in carbohydrate or fat. In one test the blood sugar level dropped two hours after the high carbohydrate meal while after the high protein meal the blood sugar did not fall below fasting level until six hours afterwards. Eat Slowly \ So if you are on a reduc ing diet, eat slowly so that your blood sugar level has time to rise before you age tempted to take mother helping. Also eat your protein first. At dinner eat your meat or fish and then your vege tables and starches. Studies have indicated that 1 in women 16 grams of pro- •• Min in a meal fallh to main tain the blood sugar level : above the fasting level for throe hours after eating while 22 grams protein main tains the blood sugar level well above the fasting level for three hours. This is one reason for the high protein reducing diet. Eat slowly and eat your proteins first if you must watch your weight. Os course you always have to count calories, too, for a loss in poundage. Most of you know what the protein foods are but I will review them today. While other foods have pro tein content the main ones— those which are classified as protein foods—are meat, fish, fowl, eggs, cheese and milk. If you missed my 9-Day Reducing Diet, which gives you a loss of from five to 10 pounds in ninp days, send 10 cents and a stamped, self addressed envelope with your request to Josephine Lowman in care of this newspaper.
