J. C. Peterson, 45, Dies; Served ICA in Ankara James C. Peterson, 45, an agricultural economist with the International Co-Operation Ad ministration, died yesterday at tne American Hospital in An kara. Turkey. Mr. Peterson, whose Wash ington address was 3816 Eighth street N.W., had been stationed in the Turkish capital for the past two years. A native of Jackson,, Miss., Mr. Peterson held a masters degree from Fisk University and did additional work at the University of Minnesota. He came to Washington around 1940 to work for the Department of Agriculture and remained there for about 12 years In 1952, he joined ICA and spent his first four-year tour of duty in India, where he and his wife adopted an 18- months-old Indian girl, Sushila Jane Peterson. After his service in India, the Petersons returned to this country for a two-month leave. He then was reassigned to Ankara. Mrs. Peterson aicompanied her husband to Turkey but re turned to the United States mm opatm Don /f Miss | t! Burial will - |be in St. John’s Cemetery in ■s Beltsvllle, Md. Phebe Ann Ross, Active in DAR Miss Phebe Ann Ross, a rest dent of Georgetown for 78 years, died Monday in Grace Hospital, Richmond. She was 86. A native of Georgetown, Mrs. Ross was for many years a member of Grace Episcopal Church there, serving on the vestry and representing the church at the Episcopal Home for the Aged. She moved to a nursing home in Richmond eight years ago. Mrs. Ross became a member of the Daughters of the Amer-1 lean Revolution in 1935 and was chapter regent from 1938 to 1940. She was also DAR state librarian and curator for the DAR museum. She belonged to the Nation al Genealogical Society. Mrs. Ross retired from the Bureau of Animal Husbandry, Department of Agriculture, In 1942 She had been employed by the Government for more than 40 years. She leaves a nephew, Irvin , R. Ross, 706 Easly street, Silver Spring. Services were to be held at > 1 p.m. today at Hines Funeral I Home. 2901 Fourteenth street i N.W. Burial was to be in Fort Lincoln Cemetery. George C. Hope, Sheriff And Ex-Football Coach PARKBLEY, Va., Feb. 26 <AP>.—Oeorge C. Hope, sheriff of Accomack County and head football coach at the Univer sity of Richmond during the 1945 season, died last night of a heart attack. The sheriff was stricken at his home here about 10:20 pjn. and died about 20 minutes later. Sheriff Hope attended Fork Union Military Academy and; was graduated from the Uni versity of Richmond in 1934. He was captain of the 1933 Spider football team and re cently was named to the all time Richmond football team. He was a tackle. He coached football at Maury High School after his gradua tion and served in the Navy during World War II In posts at Norfolk and overseas. After a year as football coach at Richmond, he returned to Accomack County and was elected sheriff In 1947. He was l re-elected to four-year terms jin 1951 and 1955. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church, a Mason, a Shriner and belonged to the Elks, Lions Club, American Le igion and Veterans of Foreign 'Wars. Survivors Include his widow, the former Miss Mary Moran 1 Barry of Norfolk, a son, a daughter, hie mother and fa ther and a sister. Dr. W. E. Martin, Ex-President of Sullins College BRISTOL. Va.. Feb. 26 (AP). I —Dr William E. Martin, presi dent emeritus of Sullins College! here, died yesterday at his home; at the college. He was 85. Dr. Martin was president of the college from 1904 to 1910 before moving to the Women'{ College of Alabama at Mont gomery, and then to Ward- Belmont College in Nashville.
