Back To School After 30 Years HOW does it feel to return to teaching after an absence of 30 years? Mrs. Mary Eva Redman, who has done Just that, found that teaching had changed considerably since she quit aßpHr A *. • H ~*• v • j Mr*. Eedman empty feeling, and I thought it would be much better all around for me to do something. I’ve been very busy since then.” Considerable reading, studying and general “brushing up” were necessary to close the 30-year gap in her experi ence. Now a substitute teacher in District elementary schools, she is enjoying herself tremendously. “Children today have more outside activities than in years past, and this makes their minds keener,” she says. "Their scope is wider. For instance, they have a science program in school that’s wonderful. And there are a lot of other new activities, too—dancing, art, language, music.” Mrs. Redman, who lives at 5528 Broad Branch road, says that substitute teaching is harder than regular teaching, but, on the other hand, “it offers a little more freedom.” "I always tell the pupils: ‘I can’t take your teacher’, place; no one can. Next to your parents, your teachers are your best friends.’ ” The first requisite of effective teaching, Mrs. Redman believes, is discipline. “Until you have that in the class,” she says, “you can’t do anything.” “Delightful task! to rear the tender thought. Marys Coun ty, Md., and scores of men and women who learned the three Rs in her one room school still remem ber her as “Miss Eva.” Mrs. Redman’s husband, Police Lt. Lewis D.
