Three years ago, Shirley MacLaine said to her husband, Steve Parker: “I'll never make it in Hollywood. I might just as well retire and live in Japan with you.” To which Steve replied, “Sure I want you in Japan with me (where he pro duces pictures). But don’t do it. There might be some thing just around the corner. You've been in show business since you were 2; you might regret it all your life.” Three weeks ago, Shirley signed the biggest deal of any movie actress in modern Hollywood history—a sl3 mil lion package, to star in four top Dpictures, - including two replacements for Elizabeth Taylor, “Irma La Douce” and “Two for the Seesaw.” But Shirley’s eyes were tearful when I lunched with her at Metro where she is currently starring in ‘“The Spinster,” with Laurence Harvey. “Do you have a cold, or aren’t you glad about your new contract?” I asked. Shir ley dabbed at her eyes. “I'm practicing wearing brown contact lenses,” she ex plained, “for my next picture, ‘My Geisha,” with Steve. There’s no such thing as a blue-eyed Geisha. I go to Japan to make it as soon as I finish ‘The Spinster,’ and I must get used to these “~—lenses”— a slight swear word escaped Miss Mac- Laine’s rosebud lips. But She’s Tricky “It’s a good thing I'm doing the picture for my husband,” she continued. “I wouldn't suffer so much for anyone else.
