SHEINWOLD ON BRIDGE By ALFRED SHEINWOLD - - Worthless Hand Tests Champion At this time of the year it is customary for bridge players in the United States to offer up thanks, just like everybody else. A player who cant find any thing else to be thankful for can always be happy that he didn't hold the East cards in today's hand. West dealer East-West vulnerable. NORTH ABBS t? J 92 OQJB7 *QIOS WEST EAST ♦B3 A742 9AKQ t>B#4 <*AK» 0 6533 ♦ AKJB7 *433 SOUTH • AKQJIO <? 10873 0 104 *O6 West North East South 2 ♦ Pass 3 0 3 A Pass Pass Dble. All Pass Opening lead: King of hearts. Mrs. Dorothy Hayden, winner of the 1050 Mixed Pair Cham pionship. held the East cards in a game with Mrs. Sylvia Stein, winner of the 1058 Life Master Individual Championship. Mind you. it isn’t necessary to be a national champion to pick up a hand like that; it might happen to any boy or girl who doesn’t eat his oatmeal. Mrs. Stein opened her power ful hand with two clubs, and Mrs. Hayden made the negative response of two diamonds. At this moment South decided to enter the breach with his ; spades. West could afford to pass. ! She had made a forcing open ing bid, and her partner was j supposed to keep the bidding open. How Forcing Mrs. Hayden's problem was now very simple: How forcing ;is a forcing bid? What would : happen if she decided to pass? Incidentally, this is a ques tion that I am asked hundreds of times each year. Does the law compel you to keep a forcing bid open? The laws of the game permit you to pass a forcing bld. To do so may be unwise, perhaps even criminally foolish—but it is permissible. When people say you “must” keep a forcing bid open, they mean that a good partner will always do so. In this case Mrs. Hayden looked at her ghastly hand and wished she hadn’t heard the alarm clock that morning. She wanted to pass, of course, but an expert who passes a forcing bid hears about it for the next 20 years—if she is lucky enough to get away from the table alive. So Mrs. Hayden doubled. Everybody passed, and South was down two. Since honors don’t count in tournament bridge, East and West scored 300 points—more than they could make at any contract of their own. So now you know what to do with a completely worthless hand. Get yourself a partner who knows how to pick up cards. Daily Question As dealer, you hold: ♦B3 <?AKQ OAK 9 *AKJB7 What do you say? Answer: Bid two clubs or 3 NT. In theory, you should not open 2 NT with a weak doubleton in any suit, but rules were made to be broken. 'Copyrltht. 1060. Oen. Feature Coro.)
