Mitten Tree Lifts Hopes Os World's Little Needy On the ellipse south of the White House stands the tall. Majestic National Christmas tree. Nearby stands a smaller Christmas tree: A mitten tree, somewhat incongruous, but a symbol of man’s concern for his less fortunate brothers. Under the auspices of the Council of Churches, National Capital Area, nearly 300 churches participated in a special program to decorate a Christ-' gaaa tree with woolen mittens, scarves, socks and caps for the cold, needy children of the wbrld. The mitten tree was con ceived by the Rev. Thomas A. 1 Stone, assistant minister of the National Presbyterian Church, ,to illustrate the theme —for fevery child peace, good will —1 repeating the words of the Rfigels at Bethlehem. -Last night at 7:30 o'clock, a special Protestant feature was presented as part of the Pageant of Peace, with the mitten tree to promote peace add good will throughout the warld. The executive secretary of the (Council of Churches, Frederick *l. Reissig, presided over the program, which included an! address by the Rev. Clarence; Cranford, former president of the council. Under the guidance of Mrs., Nancy Poore Tufts, a choir oft 5(1 children sang a number of' carols, including "The First I Nfeel” and “O Little Town of! Bethlehem.” The high point of the eve ning belonged to the children. 1 who, with solemn mien and, careful steps, walked to the' —r ; Editor to Speak br. Cart F. H.
