A Room—Neat but Not Gaudy By BETTY PEPIS Contributing Writer Family rooms need not be folksy as the latest examples of this newest room in the house indicate. Decoration for this catch-all room can even be downright sophisti cated. One way to do this is to control the clutter. Lots of little odds and ends lying about may make a room look cozy but it makes it look corny, too—a state of af fairs that almost inevitably leads to the eventual untidi ness that spoils the effect even of the best decorated room. Shelves for books, storage for trays and folding tables, chests for games and extra floor pillows, even bedding if the room accommodates a bed are in order. Copies of an old sea captain's chest would be particularly effec tive catch-alls. Lacquered in a cheerful bright red. trimmed with brass-finished bands they can be stacked two or even three high. Once storage needs are sat isfied, a decorating theme can spark up a play room. With the whole world from which to choose, imports being as varied as they are today,, it still could be interesting to look homeward for a change. The traditions and crafts of our own Southwest are suf ficiently colorful to supply inspiration. • Leather sling chairs, weath ered wood walls—real or sim ulated with wallpaper—bas kets for stools, a Navaho rug on a tile or slate floor might set the mood. A collection of cactus plants in pots and a group of Indian dolls in brightly colored wood and gaily trimmed with feathers would be logical and pretty additions. C., Saturday, January 14, 1961 ideas. The flurry of furs, fake and otherwise, could be heart warming notes in a cold climate. In recent months decorators have taken to taming wild animals and turning them to use as up holstery, rugs and piles of pillows. Eskimo stone carv ings would be appropriate here. Hawaii suggests the tropi cal lanai, an outdoor room that would transplant inside quite happily. Reed rugs, bamboo patterned paper, rat tan furniture. Japanese paper lanterns, lush plants—the tropical variety does well in steam heated rooms—could be the background for roughly carved accessories of inter esting, richly grained tropical wood. Questions and Answers Question—My living room seems drab. Sofa is beige with throw pillows in gold and olive, two chairs are an tique gold and two are nut meg. The room is 12x22 and "cut up" with radiators, doors, and windows. What would you suggest for walls and curtains? Answer—All the color in your room is muted an<| of medium value. What you need to pick it up is some light or very deep color, and a touch of bright pure color. Since the room is narrow and “cut up" architecturally. I would advise a very pale sand beige for walls, wood work. radiator covers and doors. This light, uniform background will improve the room enormously. Curtains might match the walls or be a print in tangerine or burnt orange on white or cream. Use some accents such as throw pillows and ashtrays of tangerine, sharp lime and charcoal brown.
