C„ January 15, 19H Readers 7 Clearing House Training School Candidate To: Mrs. L. J. R., Washington E. B. H., Washington Your elght-month-old fence jumping, car-chasing pup sounds to me like a perfect can didate for a bit of obedience training. Whether she is large or small, she is of an excellent age for just this training. Haven’t you ever admired the behavior of the little poodles and the large shepherds you Editor's Note * Raoderi' Charing Horn operates as a public-service exchange of ideas between Washington area readers of The Star. You can train your dog by using a book available in most large department stores, by hiring a trainer for her or by attending one of the training classes offered in most areas. In the latter, you and your dog go to school together. You can start this obedi ence training at home by buying a slip-chain collar. This is a chain with two rings on either end. The pet store manager where you buy it can explain how to put the collar on your dog. Walk your dog at your left side on a leash. If she is a true car-chaser, she will bolt for the first car she sees com ing down the street. Jerk up sharply on the leash and at the same time say “No!” in a scolding tone. The collar will draw up as she jerks sharply on the leash, and re lease as you ease off the pres sure. It won’t hurt her, and you will be amazed at how effective this will be provided you walk her at least twice a day. If you break her desire to chase the cars, I’m sure her fence jumping will also quit. You will be amazed at what a pleasure your dog can be if you continue this obedience training. And, surprisingly enough, your dog will enjoy it, too. One more thing when your dog acts subdued after your jerking on the leash, don’t forget to praise her, pat her and tell her what a good girl she is. Be persistent, and good luck. •* * • Old Book Mrs. V. C. D., Arlington I am most anxious to pur chase a copy of a book, long out of print, entitled “Lamb in His Bosom” by Caroline Miller. I would appreciate hearing from any of you readers who may have a copy of this book they would like to dispose of. •* • • Imperial Crab Mrs. A. 8., Washington I always read RCH and find it very interesting and informative. Would someone please help me get Informa tion for a friend whose Christmas letter from Agana, Guam, reads in part as fol lows: “I am disturbed because I lost my Paddleford recipe for imperial crab—am sure I left home (Oregon) with It. If you have or can get it for me, I would appreciate it.” Thank you. ' *• * * Carpetbag Mr. M. E. 8., Washington With the Civil War Cen tennial very much in the news, and so many Civil War replicas for sale, I wonder if there is anyone who knows where an authentic type car petbag could be purchased.
