Vs., Jan. 14—William Zakoor's Pie in Sky won a three-horss'photo finish in the featured West Virginia Purse at Charles Town today before a jam-packed crowd of 9,328. The camera split the three noses on the wire. Pie in Sky was given the narrow triumph over Claiborne B. Carter’s Little Limey, who in turn was a nose ahead of George A. Stallwood’s West Four, a 24- to-1 shot. The latter beat out Harleigh, the 3-to-2 favorite, by a length and * half. Harleigh’s defeat Wks the second straight blow to the chalk players. In the previous race. War Novel, the 2-to-5 favorite, finished fourth after $42,504 had been bet on him across the board. Pie in Sky paid $8.40, $4.60 and $3.40. Little Limey re turned $6.80 and $5.20 and West Four $930. $749,797 Is Bet Despite the ill fortune of the favorite plungers, the largest Saturday turnout of this boom ing winter meeting managed to shove $749,767 through the windows and also established a single race record pool in the feature. The former one race mark of $89,897, set on January 2 this year, was erased when $96,899 wm bet on the seventh event. It wm the third time this month that the wagering soared above $700,000. To day’s total was the second best in Charles Town’s history. The winter session, shortened this year by Bowie’s early open ing, closes next Saturday when the Maryland track launches the major 1961 Eastern racing season. In the 7-furlong West Vir ginia Purse, Little Limey, car rying 120 pounds, wm placed in the lead immediately by Jockey Preddy Kratz. The 4- year-old colt shook off nu merous challenges but wm not quite equal to Pie in Sky’s late drive. Jocket Victore Espinosa paced Pie in Sky perfectly and sent his mount between Little Limey and West Four to grab the squeaker on the wire. Weight-Break Big Help Pie in Sky, who wm claimed by his present owner for $3,000 at the last Pimlico meeting, carried 112 pounds, and the break in the weights might have been the deciding factor. The much-improved 4-year old gelding ran the seven eighths over a fMt track in 1:27%. No excuse could bo found for War Novel’s disappointing performance in the sixth race. In contention throughout un der Kratz, War Novel faltered in the final eighth mile of the 6%-furlong dash, which went to the late-dosing Set the Hair ($23.80). The favorite player* were successful only in the fifth race when Sam Leona ($5.40) won. The dally double payoff amounted to $33.20 when Fo ray’s Boy ($7.40) and Redelec tor ($11) accounted for the first two events. Once again Charles Town re ceived strong support from New York and New Jersey horseplayera as 742 fans made the long trip on 20 buses. An other 962 arrived on the spe cial train from Baltimore and Washington. Jockey Ronald Zangarl was handed a 15-day suspension by the Charles Town stewards for "rough riding" aboard Kamal Bey in Friday’s seventh race. Post-time for the first race will be 1:30 pm. daily for the , nine-race card. There will be j no racing on Tuesdays throughout the meeting, which , extends through March 29. Donald C. Lillis, president of , Bowie and the leading figure in , bringing early-winter racing to j Maryland, thinks the record 1 purse distribution of $1,638,525 ' will lure enough good horses to ' make it enteresting for the j fans. More Horses Expected Additional shipments are due tomorrow from winter training quarters at Nashville, 1 Tenn., Bt. Mathews., 8. C., and < Shrewsbury. N. J. Stall Super intendent Lawrence Lacey ex pects the track’s 1,106 stalls to , be filled, with an overflow bedded down at nearby Laurel. Horsemen took advantage of last week’s break in the weath er to get in some badly needed training licks, although snow and cold kept most off the track only a few days. Many stables remained at Bowie throughout the year, vanning their runners to Laurel and Pimlico for engagements at those tracks, and will be ready when Starter Eddie Blind springs the barrier. The $15,000-added Francis Scott Key, a 5% -furlong dash for 3-year-olds, headlines the opening-day card.
