What to Wear Suggestions Made For the Inaugural Festivities A review of “what to wear, • when" for the coming Inau gural festivities during this week, is definitely on the agenda for today. Both men and women will be confidant that they are correctly at tired if they will abide by the following guide, covering the main celebrations that will take place. January 18: Reception for distinguished ladies at the National Gallery of Art: Af ternoon gowns (not too dressy and preferably of street length) to be comple mented by hat, gloves and , purse. Reception in honor of .the Vice President-elect and Mrs. Johnson; The same as above for the women, and a dark suit, white shirt and conser vative tie, for the gentle men. Young Democrats recep tion and dance: Dinner gown (or not too elaborate evening ones) for the wom en. Black tie (dinner jack ets) for their escorts. January 19: Reception for the Governors of States and special distinguished vistors: Afternoon gowns and dark suits (as in the case of the party in honor of the Vice President-elect). Inaugural Concert at Con stitution Hall: For the wom en, dinner gowns, either , short or long, and dinner jackets for the men are preferred. In this case, women will be wise, and correct, if they wear short, or ballerina-length gowns. ’ reason being that in the crush, a long dress is apt to be stepped on and torn. Then, too, they are very cumbersome when sitting in closely placed theater seats. January 29 For the oath taking ceremonies at the Capitol, those officials who will appear on the platform ' (such as Governors of States and other top-ranking offi cials) should wear formal day dress—the tutoway and silk topper hat. Their wives, daytime gowns and hats. The general spectator will nat urally wear business suits and daytime clothes (plus heavy overcoats!). The Inaugural Balls: The women can really “let go” here! The most formal, long ball gowns, worn with above elbow-length gloves and exotic hairdoes, are appro priate for this great occasion. Full dress (white tie and tails) are the best attire for the gentlemen. However, dinner jackets are permis sible and short evening gowns may be worn. But, if you cam really “dress up” for this great celebration! You won’t regret it if you do! Orchestra Leader Henry King, who will play at one of the Inaugural Balls on Friday, is coming to Wash ington two days early with a 20-plece band to play for the Texas party. Vice Pres ident-elect Johnson particu- r larly favors the pianist’s mu sical style of the soft tea dance type. About a thousand pounds of rare, well-done and medi um roast beef will disappear during this party witti guests choking their cuts fjrom 90- pound steamship rounds of beef sliced to preference and served with rolls. An East erner may consider he’s en joying a roast beef sandwich, but to' a Westerner, it’s a “Texas round.” Bay State Blues The Massachusetts State Society elected not to hold a party during inaugural week. The group’s president said a party would put the organ ization in a hole financially. “We tried teaming up with Texas,” President Harold Pini said, “but their recep tion became so tremendous we had to back out.” Connecticut’s local State society plans an all-out gala, however, from V to 7 pm. Friday, prior to the Inaugural Ball, in the Hotel Statler Hilton. Mrs. William R. Connole, whose husband is the former Federal Power commissioner, is president of the organiza tion. She expects a tremen dous turnout honoring the State’s appointees in the Kennedy administration. They Include HEW Secre tary-designate Ribicoff, Un dersecretary of State-desig nate Chester Bowles, Assist ant Secretory of State Roger Jones and the new Demo cratic National Committee chairman, John A. Bailey. Foot Guards Too There will be an abundance of color combined with music at this party, provided by the appearance of Connecticut’s Ist and 3d Battalions of the Governors Foot Guard who will come directly from marching in the Inaugural Parade.
