C-20 Amusements • THE PASSING- SHOW ■ ' - Z A Raisin in the Sun' Also Potent on Film By JAY CARMODY Drama Critic of The Star Hard on the heels of the play version at the National comes the film. “A Raisin in the Sun,” and those who missed the popular stage work have no further cause for regret. In at least one vital respect, the movie at the Traffs-Lux 1* Indeed dramatically superior. This is in its presentation of Sidney Poitier in the son role which he created on Broadway, but later bequeathed to Doug las Turner, his understudy, who played it at the National. Poitier, the Marlon Brando of his race, finds the true and turbulent depths of frustration in the key male character which Playwright Lorraine Hansberry created. It is the perfect match for the playing of the others, most of these moving over from the original to the film. Most epecially does it balance with the proud re straint of Claudia McNeil's mother, and the tired but in exhaustible courage of Ruby Dee as Poitier’s wife. One sees again on the screen that exquisitely orchestrated performance which earned the play its New York Drama Crit ics’ Circle prize. And is bound to earn the film a high place on Hollywood’s 1961 honor roll, with several Academy award prospects. The single small area for quibbling with Daniel Petrie's direction of the film relates to his failure to open it up to meet the challenge of the screen’s wider scope. Undoubtedly, his answer would be that "A Rais in in The Sun" is essentially a dramatic narrative confined to a congested slum flat living room. •* * * Its screen magnification in no way distorts the proportions of Miss Hansberry’s play for which, by the way, she did the adaptation. “A Raisin in The Sun” gains truly in the deepened sympathy : with which Poitier infuses his role, the addition of a musical score, and the smoothness of its flow before the cameras lens. While Miss Hansberry’s Youngers are Negro and thus, trapped in the special problems of race, they are nevertheless typical of all underprivileged jpinorities. Their most violent conflicts are within the. family. They lie between the older and middle generations, the grand- : mother played by Miss McNeil, j and her 35-year-old son and college age daughter and, secondarily, between the stormy, impatient and ambi tious Poitier and the cooler, 7ft HIT HOJW A STILL th BRIGHTEST HIT hi Teve/1 fl f A MELINA MERCOURI I V tffINEVER i IflON SUNDAY! -■ 'JICS-V-' 1 K ' * >Ht relt week/ A *——»-•<'- -. *JuLES Dassin WHAT A PLEASURE... and it’s all yours! Igniting the explosion in the lives of the Youngers is a SIO,OOO life insurance check, a sacrificial legacy from Miss Mc- Neil’s dead husband. The son, Poitier, would use it to buy a share in a liquor store and to give up his cloying job as a chauffeur. The mother wants it for the home, with a garden plot, of which she has been dreaming since her first child was born. The daughter, a med ical student, would like a share to help her through her educa tion. In their contrasting person alities, the Youngers are a dramatic lot. And, in this con flict, they have a great deal to reveal of human nature that never quite escapes the effect of skin color but which often comes close. It is one of the most ap pealing aspects of the film that in imbuing it with so much of tension, Miss Hansberry never loses her sense of humor. She allows the Youngers to be funny, the mother dry, droll, stubbornly proud; the son bit ingly but Amusingly critical of the Negro woman s spiritless ness: the avant garde daughter a cynic who can be as hilar- I ious as she is acid. ♦♦ ♦ » As it must be with such a gifted cast, the acting in “A Raisin in the Sun” is superb.
