And then ‘ there’s the group who hold that; ■ sentences—like this one—can . not begin with “and" or “but.” > Still a third lot pales at the prospect of ending a sentence with a preposition. Just a few days ago. your Word Man drew a flurry of mail from still another passel of pained purists. The sentence that brought down their wrath had to do, believe it or not. with the sacred albino elephant of Siam. In explaining their connection with the common phrase "white elephant sale,” I noted that each white elephant born in that ancient empire “became automatically the property of the king and none were permitted to work.” That phrase “none were” caused howls of protest. “None” in |he view of these complain ers is merely a shortened form of “no-one” and hence should be followed by a singular verb. As one of the more restrained critical voices (that of Win. R. Phipps of Bushwood, Md.) put it: “Since I 2iive always be lieved the word 'none’ to be, in meaning, ‘no one.’ I hgve always practiced the use of the singular form of the regulated verb Am I in error, or am I being merely pedantic, or am I guilty of ‘elegant’ usage?” Well, that's rather a hard question to answer, for there certainly is nothing wrong in using a singular after “none.” The error arises in deyning that it’s at least equally correct to use a plural, where that seems I indicated. Hear H. W. Fowler, —By Mort Walker author of the Dictionary of Modern English Usage, on this point: “It is a mistake to suppose that this pronoun is singular only and must at all costs be followed by singular verbs: the Oxford English Dictionary ex- MARMADUKE — B y Anderson and Leeming YVTL N4»«p S»nd . Inr of AmerwA ® “Yes, it is getting a little choppy!” plicitly states that the plural construction is commoner. American authorities agree with this dsitinguished authority— and I practice what they preach.” (Copyright (C). 1063. by William Mornsi (A Bell Syndicate Feature) THE EVENING STAR Washington, D.
