C. 20 Leo Pascal, Archivist, Auto Historian, Dies Leo Pascal, 52, one of the country’s foremost authorities on automobile history, died yes terday at George Washington University Hospital after being ill for two inonths with cancer. Mr. Pascal, who lived at 2303 Amherst road, West Hyattsville, Md., had worked as an ar chivist at the National Ar chives for the last 20 years. As a hobby, he had set up a collection of articles represent ing the history of the auto. Ten years ago he was in charge of planning the history exhibit for. the American Auto mobile Association’s conven tion at the Mayflower Hotel. Music, Toys Included His own collection included 100 pages of sheet music re lating to autos. In addition to thousands of books on auto mobile history, he had col lected 150 antique toys repre senting the various makes of cars. Mr. Pascal also lectured lo cally on the McGuffey’s Reader system of education. When he was a college student a teacher gave him a box of the readers. Mr. Pascal used this as the nucleus for a collection which Edward Sokolowski, Leader Os Polish Club, VA Ex-Aide Edward Carl Sokolowski, a leader In the metropolitan area’s Polish community and a retired Veterans Administra tion employe, died Saturday at Prince Georges General Hos pital after a short illness. He was 63. Mr. Sokolowski of Enterprise road, Mitchellville. Md., was president of the Polish Club of Washington. He was retired last year from his job as ad judicator of claims at the VA. Bom in Tamow, Poland, he came to this country In 1907 and settled in Plymouth, Pa. He moved to Washington in 1919 and received a degree In accounting from the old South ern University here In 1926 after attending evening classes. Oliver Bucher, Retired General, VMI Official LEXINGTON, Va., Mar. 19 <AP).—Brig. Gen. Oliver Boone Bucher, 71, a former comman dant of cadets at Virginia Mili tary Institute, died Saturday in an Army hospital at Fort McPherson, Ga. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm., tomorrow in the chapel at Fort Myer. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery. He was commandant of ca dets at VMI for four years after World War n, retiring in 1951. He had retired from the Army after 33 years on De cember 31, 1950. Gen. Bucher earned top hon ors while a student at the in stitute prior to World War I. He was first captain of the corps, president of his class and captain of the baseball team. He served in both World Wars. After retirement he served briefly as a field representa tive of VMI Foundation, Inc. Mrs. Maloney, 75, Long in Area, Active in Church Mrs. Patrick J. Maloney, 75, a resident of the Washington area for many years, died yes terday of a heart attack at the home of a friend in Wash ington. Mrs. Maloney lived at 4027 Hamilton street, Hyattsville, Md. The former Camille Meyers, she was bom in Columbia City, Ind. She was active in St. Je rome’s Catholic Church in Hyattsville, where she was ac tive tn the sodality and the Ladles of Charity. Her husband, who was treas urer of the Home Owners Loan Corp., died about nine years ago. Mrs. Maloney leaves a son, Philip J., 4520 Burlington place N.W., and three grandchildren. One sister and five brothers in Columbia City also survive. Friends may call today and tomorrow at the Gasch Funeral Home, 4739 Baltimore avenue, Hyattsville. Services and burial will be in Columbia City on Friday. Actor Frank Orth, In Dr. Kildare Films HOLLYWOOD, Mar. 19 (AP). Veteran Character Actor Frank Orth is dead at 82. Mr. Orth, who played Inspec tor Farraday in the Boston Blackie television series, began his show business career in ; vaudeville in 1897. He played in the Nancy Drew and original i Dr. Kildare movies. Mrs. Strother, Active in AF Wives' Groups 7 Mrs. Dean C. Strother, wife of the deputy chief of staff for operations at Air Force head ' quarters, died yesterday of cancer in Andrews Air Force Base Hospital. A native of Batesville, Va., Mrs. Strother was educated in Austin, Tex., where her late father, T. U. Taylor, was for many years head of the School of Engineering of the Univer sity of Texas. Mrs. Strother had lived here with her husband since 1968. After World War n, Gen. Strother was stationed here as a student at the National War College and was assigned to Air Force headquarters. Before she became ill about two years ago, Mrs. Strother was active In Air Force officers’ wives’ organizations. In addition to her husband, she leaves a daughter. Miss Julia Ann Strother of the home address at Bolling Air Force Base. Services will be at 10 am. Wednesday in Fort Myer Chapel. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery. Geraldine Fitez, School Teacher Miss Geraldine M. Fitez, sb, a Montgomery County school teacher, died yesterday at Prince Georges General Hos pital after a brief Illness. Miss Fitez had taught English at Montgomery Blair and Sherwood High Schools for the last four years. She previously taught In her native Frederick, Md. She recevied her bachelor’s degree from Washington Col lege in Chestertown, Md., and her master’s from George Washington University. For several years she attended summer education courses at Columbia University. During this time, Miss Fitez also worked at the National Education As sociation here before returning to Frederick. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Viola C. Shook of the home address, 8402 Manchester road, Silver Spring. Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Collins Funeral Home, 3821 Fourteenth street N.W. Burial will be in Frederick. Freddy Clark, 76, Musician 30 Years in D. C. Theaters Charles Fred Clark, a vet eran musician who spent 30 years directing the music in Washington theaters, died Fri day of a heart attack in Bir mingham, Ala. Mr. Clark, known as Freddy in the days when he was mas ter of the pit at Keith’s and the Earle Theaters, was 76. A veteran of theater pits in Lynn, Mass., and Boston, Mr. Clark came to Washington in 1913 to be musical director for the new Keith’s Theater. Built a year before as an early movie house, Keith’s had just been turned into a vaudeville the ater and Mr. Clark conducted the orchestra on opening night. Keith's dropped vaudeville in 1930 and Freddy went to the Earle (now the Warner The ater). He stayed as long as vaudeville did, until 1944. A favorite of several Presi- Miss Kroes Ficklin; Taught In Alexandria 45 Years Miss Kroes Ficklin, 89, a re tired Alexandria high school teacher, died at her home yes terday. She had lived at 714 Duke street for 65 years. Miss Ficklin, born in Alexan dria, was the daughter of Theodore H. Ficklin, who also was identified with the Alexan dria school system, and for whom an elementary school is named. Miss Ficklin taught English at the old Alexandria High School and later at George Washington High for 45 years. She recalled proudly after her retirement that she never missed a day of classes. James Francis Vermillion, Once Athletic Star Here James Francis Vermillion. Connecticut avenue N.W.. and one-time athlete at McKinley Tech High School and an em ploye of the Potomac Electric Power Co. for 22 years, died yesterday at his home in Silver Spring. Mr. Vermillion, who was 44, lived at 201 Williamsburg drive. He was a native of Wash ington and spent most of his early life here. He died of a heart condition and other ailments. Mr. Vermillion was out standing in basketball and football at McKinley before graduation in 1937. Later he starred at Devltt Prep School here. An Army paratrooper in World War n, he was among forces Invading France in 1944 and received the Purple Heart and Legion of Merit. He served with the 501st Parachute In fantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. Mr. Vermillion was an in spector at PEPCO. He was a member of the Kilowatt Club, an employe group. Stokes, Vice President Os Riggs Branch Nelson Miles Stokes, 59, vice president of the Lincoln Branch of the Riggs National Bank, was found dead yesterday at his home, 3305 Chestnut street N.W. Coroner A. Magruder Mac- Donald issued a certificate of suicide today. Police said Mr. Stokes’ wife found the body hanging by a clothesline from a cellar ceiling rafter. A family physician said Mr. Stokes had a heart attack about a year ago and had been depressed about his health. Mr. Stokes had been associ ated with the Lincoln National Bank since 1920. It merged with Riggs in 1958. He was named assistant branch manager in 1935 and assistant cashier in 1937. He be came vice president and cashier in 1955. Services will be at Gawler’s Chapel, 1756 Pennsylvania ave nue N.W., at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be private. Rafael Busoni NEW YORK, Mar. 19 (AP). Funeral services were sched uled today in Birmingham. Mr. Clark leaves his wife, now living in Birmingham, and two daughters, Mrs. George D. King, jr., of Birmingham and Mrs. Leo S. Thompson of Los Angeles. She was an alumna of George Washington University. She wrote her master’s thesis on the soldier poets of the South. A charter member of the Dr. Elisha Dick chapter of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, she also belonged to the Business and Profes sional Women’s Club. Miss Ficklin leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Northrop, of the home address.
