O-IUUZ SHEINWOLD ON BRIDGE By ALFRED SHEINWOLD Don't Rush To Finesse In some hartds therels no need to take your finesses a hurry. Set the stage first and then see about the fi nesses. North dealer. Both sides vulnerable. NORTH ♦ AQ73 t?AQ9 0Q63 ♦ QIOS WEST EAST A6 *5 S2JB2 VK1075 0 JlO 9 8 0K 7 4 ♦ K 9543 AAJB72 SOUTH AKJ109842 <7643 0 A62 « North East South West INT Pass 4 4 All Pass Opening lead: Diamond Jack. There’s no need to play the queen of diamonds from dummy at the first trick. Wouldn’t you feel foolish if East had the singleton king? The hand is unbeatable no matter how the cards lie if you play a low diamond from dummy and win with the ace in your hand. Lead a trump to dummy’s seven and ruff a club. Lead a trump to dummy and ruff another club. Then lead an other trump to dummy and ruff out dummy’s last club. These plays set the stage. Deep Finesse You are now ready to lead a heart. If West plays low, finesse with dummy’s nine. If Wpst puts up the jack of hearts you can finesse with dummy’s queen. In either case East can win the trick but cannot afford to return a heart since that would give dummy a free fi nesse. If East returns a dia- , mond, dummy’s queen will win' a trick. And if East returns a club, dummy can ruff while you discard a loser. The contract is sure no mat ter what East does and no matter where the cards lie. It’s possible to go down if you play the queen of dia monds from dummy and win with the ace when East puts up the king. West can get in twice with diamonds and can lead hearts twice through dummy. This gives East the > chance to get two heart tricks. Daily Question • • As dealer, you hold: ♦KJ 10 984 2 4 3 <>A6 2♦— What do you say? Answer: Pass. You can bid vigorously later, but the hand is not worth an opening bid of one, and is too strong for a shutout bid.
