But eight small children present no problems at all for Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Cham bers, who have just built their dream house. ‘‘Everything I went through in the old house has been eliminated in the new one,” Mrs. Chambers says, ‘‘except the kids." Their huge new home in the Temple Hills area of Prince Georges County, for instance, has 11 bedrooms, nine bathrooms, two living rooms, two kitchens, two din ing rooms, three play areas— and even a dog’s room. Detailed Planning Mr. Chambers, one of the most successful funeral di rectors in the country, says he and his wife spent years planning their new home while living in a four bedroom house in Riverdale, Md. Then they devoted two years working out the de tailed plans with noted ar chitect Leon Chatelain. And Funds For iCWUJIJT COMMERCIAL LOANS L-SsiiH =We win Buy deferred purchase G. NA. 8-2100 Serving Greater Washington Since 1892 I Mortgage Loans—Property Management—lnsurance William Furman of Bethesda spent a year building it—at a cost of $128,000. “We planned the house so that formal living is at one end and the children’s area at the other,” says Mrs. Chambers. “Each of the chil dren has an individual bed room, and there’s a two bedroom maids’ suite near the younger children’s rooms.” Master Suite Mrs. Chambers is proudest, though, of the master bed room suite. Located away from the children’s rooms, it includes a large bedroom, a double bath, a den, a sewing room and numerous "closets. The house was so carefully planned, Mr. Chambers notes, that while the main kitchen operates on electric ity, the full kitchen in the recreation room is all gas in case of power failure. Visitors often remark that the kitchen looks almost like that of a small restaurant— especially when they see the milk dispenser which holds more than 7 gallons and must be filled twice a week. And in the basement there’s an 8-by-12-foot walk-in freezer that would make many res taurant owners envious. Play Areas Also in the basement, just off the huge recreation room, are a room where the girls practice tap dancing and another for crafts. Both are soundproof. “That takes care of prob lems about where to play on rainy days,” Mrs. Chambers says. But if the children do come into the house with muddy shoes and dripping coats, there’s a large mud room containing eight individual coat stalls to take care of them. Children playing in distant areas of the huge house are no bother for Mrs. Cham bers, either. An elaborate in tercom system permits her to communicate with every room as well as the nearby yards. Besides ample play areas in the house and on the 17-acre grounds, the Chamberses have provided the children with a 20-by-40-foot swim- ming pool. And for a bath house, they use a big house trailer which sleeps eight. Since Mr. and Mrs. Cham bers are boating enthusiasts, they used their experience with ships to make certain all available space in the house was utilized fully through careful planning. “We knew what we wanted, and Mr. Chatelain and his assistant, Tom Stohlman, knew how to do it,” Mr. Chambers says. “After the plans were completed, we didn't make any changes at all. Little Maintenance “The house was designed to be practical rather than elaborate. For instance, the exterior is brick with slate siding, and the roof is slate. Therefore, there will be very little maintenance. And we used washable paint on the interior walls.” Concerning the size of her new home, Mrs. Chambers says: “I think we have ap proximately 28 to 30 rooms. I never counted them. I haven’t had the time, since we moved in so recently.” But there’s one statistic Mr. Chambers is certain about. “We have 105 doors in the house.” I tU v 'PSt'™ -"e > “ JJW»v ss<? —l.» , - - z ~,,,,_ -i .• - •-> ‘ • , ’•'•‘V.v- - ■ _..
