General Dynamics Set
To Develop New Jets
By the Associated Press
General Dynamics Corp, was picked by the Pentagon yes
terday to develop the first test planes in what will become a
multi-billion-dollar program for building universal design fighter
aircraft for the Air Force and Navy.
The Defense Department said this “will surpass any fighter
aircraft program since World War II in both numbers and
dollars.”
No specific cost figures were given, but unofficial guesses
were that upward of $5 billion
could go into production of
well over 1,500 aircraft.
General Dynamics, with
Grumman Corp, as an asso
ciate, will build 22 test planes,
with the first to be delivered
within the next 2*/i hours.
Yesterday’s award was for
development and building of
the test planes and not for
production. That will come
after the development program
has reaching an advanced
point. However, the fact that
the General Dynamics-Grum
man team received the prime
development award could be
significant.
The TFX comes to General
Dynamic's Fort Worth works
at a time when it is phasing out
work on a B-58 program. The
last plane under this contract
was delivered a month ago and
employment there was being
reduced.

"couldn't tell when there will
be an employment increase, if
any,” at Fort Worth. But in
Fort Worth there were esti
mates that more than 18,000
new jobs may be involved.
Much Competition
The contest for the develop
ment contract was one of the
hardest fought in the aircraft
industry in years. A few months
ago, it narrowed down from an
original 10 companies to two
of the titans of the industry.
General Dynamics and the'
Boeing Co.
The Defense Department’s
announcement said the final
choice was difficult "because
of the excellence of the two
submissions.”
It chose General Dynamics,
the statement said, because that,
company's proposal "offered
the best chance of developing
an airplane that would be both '
operationally acceptable and'
compatible with the require
ments of the two services.”
Edward C. Wells, vice presi
dent and general manager of
Boeing s military aircraft sys
tems division, commented in
Seattle:
? “This was a tough contest,
‘ and one which we hate to lose.”
He added that the competi
tion gave his division "a tech
nical capability that could not
otherwise have been attained
in so short a period” and put
it in a strong position to com- i
pete for other contracts.
Supersonic Speed
• What Secretary of Defense
McNamara wants is a jet fight
er plane that, with some rela
i tively small differences in size,
and weight and with the ability
to change configuration of its
wings while in flight, can fly
Air Force, Navy or Marine
missions.
To make this possible Gen
eral Dynamics is to design a
plane which;
1. Flies at about 1,400 miles
top speed and at supersonic
speed at sea level.
2. Can take off and land on
short, rough airfields in forward
battle areas or be launched and
recovered by aircraft carriers. '
3. "Can fly anywhere in the
world in one day” through use
of aerial refueling.
4. Can use either conven
tional or nuclear weapons
against targets on the ground
or enemy planes in the air.
Savings Forecast
The Defense Department be- r
lieves that by coming up with i
a basic design for the tactical:
I fighter, about $1 billion can be i
saved as compared with the
coßt of developing separate de- |
signs for the Air Force and
Navy.
The Air Force will call its
version the FIIIA, the Navy’s
name is FIUB.
The plane will have a two
man crew. Its complicated ra
dar equipment and weapons
system will require more than
I just a pilot's attention.
Cedarcroft Uses
Day-Care System
A new program for mental
patients—treatment on a day
care basis has been an
nounced by Cedarcroft Sanitar
ium and Hospital in Silver
Spring, Md.
The program tries to econo
mize on both human and fi
nancial resources by providing
hospital-type care while allow
, ing the patient to live at home.;
The staff of the hospital says
this permits a lower charge of
$12.50 per day, including a mid
day dinner. They also point'
out that the patient can thus
get intensive treatment with
; out losing contact with his
I family and community.
Cedarcroft’s new program
emphasizes care for children
and adolescents.
