J., Takoma Park Mrt. M. S. G., Alexandria Our daughter was 2 when we started camping; she is now 5 and looks forward to our camping trips as much as her father and I do. We have several suggestions that may be helpful to you, although our child is probably older than yours. We started with her sleeping in my sleeping bag with me. We found it much more satisfactory for her to have her own sleeping bag. Putting duffel bags, laun dry bags or suitcases around her sleeping bag prevents her from rolling out onto the tent floor. In the mountains in Colo rado when she was 3, we also had her wear a blanket type sleeper suit. We have seen babies on camping trips sleeping in portable cribs or playpens and this seems a good idea for a very young child. We use powdered milk, just mixing the amount needed, when on long trips in out-of the-way places. This saves cooler space and you aren’t as likely to run out. The individually packaged pre - moistened towels have been a big help in keeping her hands and face clean. We take along a very small in flatable child's plastic wading pool to use as a bathtub. This is used inside the tent and put on a large piece of plastic to prevent splashing on the tent floor. In chilly weather we heat water in a tea kettle for the bath. When it is warm outside, the child can use the pool for “swimming” in the sun. We take a few toys with us —doll, some doll clothes, crayons and a pad of paper, a ball and some books. A small dump truck or tractor or pail and shovel are fun for playing in the dirt. We also take a Mexican string - type hammock that rolls up into a ball. We string it between two trees and our child loves to swing in this, and it is an attraction for other children in the area. In Colorado we saw many young children (toddler age) wearing leather harnesses. Their parents felt these were Here's How Readers’ Clearing House is con ducted ENTIRELY THROUGH THE MAIL as o public-service exchange of ideas between area readers. We are rather new to this area and have never been camping around Washington, so we would certainly ap preciate any ideas you might have about the nearby parks. I hope you enjoy camping this summer and that your WEE WOMEN >A4_ Cep *1 tool RoofMsCoi*.
