Within the Home Keep Decor for Children Safe By BITTY FIFIS Contributing Writer One important thing that > may be overlooked when dec orating a child’s room is the safety factor. Parents proceed with the Intention of creating a gay and pretty background and often Ignore the fact that what may be functional for adults b not necessarily workable .’or children. None of Jiis applies to the Infant but from the minute a child begins to toddle or even crawl it becomes an im portant consideration. Furniture oddly enough can become a menace. If shoddily made or the least bit tippable it can become a serious hazard. Conscientious manufacturers have taken this into consideration and their furniture is both steady and sturdy. When buying, it is well to test this factor by pushing the piece to be sure it doesn't even sway. Lamps should be subjected to the same kind of investi tojtlon. Hare, the peril is even greater for a pulled-out ritric cord can be a danger, well as the piece, or the Shattered electric bulbs. Built-ins Best Solution to this is to avoid floor lamps, put table size ones at spots above the Bach and incor in built-in fixtures or side iut the toys is blem. Covering radiators not only is a protective measure for the small child but a decora tive asset as well. Even If this seems an extravagance in the rest of the house, in a young child’s room, it is more than worthwhile. CREED Contributing Writer An improperly placed hedge or fence can result in a heavy deposit of snow on a walk or driveway, but better placed, a hedge or fence can control the drift onto such areas. Drift along exposed stretches of railroads and highways has been con trolled, at least to a certain extent, by snow fences • wooden slats wired together. Such fencing is flexible and can be rolled up and stored. As a temporary measure, it can be used on a small prop erty, but taking it down and erecting it each year is a nuisance. Besides, it will not add to the beauty of your home. Better looking and less bothersome means of con trolling snow drift are to be found in regular fences and hedges. Locations for these should be studied carefully. Otherwise, you may aggra vate your problem Instead of solving it. With so many variables existing between properties, there are no pat solutions or formulas to determine barrier locations. This requires ob servation on your part at a time when the prevailing wind is blowing after snow has fallen. You then can see what happens to snow blown across your property and es timate where a barrier will be most effective. Generally speaking, hedge |FfT. A hedge or other bar rier, located at some distance to windward of the driveway, woqld control drifting. The height of any snow barrier, as well as its po rosity, are important factors. A barrier that is too low will become quickly covered with snow and. while acting as a positive deterrent, will only be partially effective. This is also true of a hedge or fence that is too open, for snow will simply pass through it.
