ON TWF 4/R 2 TV Documentaries That Pack a Wallop By BERNIE HARRISON Iter TVCrt tie I taw a TV documentary yesterday that made ma Rulp. Mark down “The Rebirth of Jonxiy”—next Monday, 8 pm., WTTG—s—as one “must watch.” It is the story of a child res eued from the darkneaa of schizophrenia by a dedicated clinical psychologist. A measure of the program's mesmerizing appeal is the way the woman therapist—who appears at first with some labored remarks in the dourest Ben Casey manner —is transformed, with each scene with the child, into a glowing, wise, vibrant woman. The story-telling technique which recapitulates a case . (which the therapist, Mira. Rothenberg, wrote for a maga zine) is imaginative in its use of still pictures, film, and med ical comment. If the use of a case so obviously classic may overstate the point, the docu mentary does not make the mistake of telescoping Jonny’s rebirth as anything but the slow, torturous, two-ateps-for ward. one - step - backward ' process that takes years. > And like all good documen- > taries, it raises questions in the viewer's minds. David Wayne narrates and Tony Mottola, whom you may remember from the old Danger shows, supplies an unobstrusive but apt musical background. The program will be repeated Sunday, March 17, 9 to 10 pm. ** • • A scene in another docu mentary previewed this week made me gulp, too—it was an extraordinarily poignant film clip from Arthur Miller’s “The Misfits" (Gable and Monroe), which climaxes another one of those interesting but flashy recapitulations of Hollywood which David Wolper is turning out for TV. The accent this time is on the “Great Stars" and we commend it to you for this scene, in particular, a shot of young Marlene Dietrich, and an amusing bang-bang review of Jimmy Cagney's career. It will be shown next Wednesday, 10 p.m„ WMAL-7.
