A-16 Racing Ar the races Chesapeake Gives Preakness Lift ar-.. ; Sb As expected, Laurel’s Chesapeake Stakes failed to add a challenger to the Kentucky Derby field May 4 in Louisville, but the Preakness received a boost. Wheately Stable’s Bold Commander, who broke Laurel's mile-and-a-sixteenth track record in winning the Chesapeake, was not nominated to the Derby but he is eligible for the Preakness and will be a most welcome addition. Not only is he a son of Bold Ruler, who won the Preakness! in 1957, but he also is trained by the incomparable Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons. What a fit ting climax it would be to his remarkable career, which he 1 announced will end in June, when he retires, should he sad dle another Preakness winner. Mr. Fitz was not at Laurel Saturday to saddle the regally bred Bold Commander, but his assistant, affable Alf Robert son, was quite confident about his chances. ‘ This colt is coming to him self again and Hedley Wood house knows how to ride him," Alf said a few hours before the Chesapeake. Plenty of Laurel Fans agreed with Robertson and made the colt a 9-5 favorite, and then watched him romp home in 1:43%, two-fifths faster than Greek Money last spring. The Chesapeake developed into an all-Preakness show be cause the first four finishers— Bold Commander.
