CRITICS VIEW Liza Sings Like Judy But Lacks Wistfulness By CYNTHIA LOWRY AP Television-Radio Writer NEW YORK, April 22 —Liza Minelli, Judy Garland's 17- year-old daughter, made tele vision’s big time last night, per forming on Ed Sullivan’s CBS show. She’s very much like her mother. She has Judy's voice but without that sad and wist ful quality that has tugged at the hearts of two generations of moviegoers. She looks like Judy, too, and has some of her mannerisms, including that odd, stiff-legged way of stand ing as if she were uncomfort able in high heels. Generally speaking, it was a ! rather uninspired week end of television. NBC experimented last night with a mood piece “American Landmark,’’ in which Fredric March retold the story of the 1775 British strike at Lexington and Concord. The | cameras wandered around the places where it happened, and[ there were sound effects. It was a little pretentious and rather dull. Old motion pictures, no matter how you use them, no matter what their age, are tele vision gold mines. Television stations all over i the Nation fill their schedules with feature films of other years, and there are places even for those dearly grade D movies produced on a shoestring and used to plump out triple fea ture theater bills in the early 19405. The more recent big budget' movies with big star names are used successfully,by the tele-! vision networks to woo audi-j ences away from opposition j bills of fare. David L. Wolper, a young producer, has staked out an especially rich vein of nostalgia by using films made during the golden days of Hollywood. He already has produced and sold several hour specials on the subject, collaborated in a summer series now in re-run. And this fall he’ll have “The Hollywood Story” on NBC— half-hour weekly shows relying Roosevelt High Sets Music, Drama Night A music and drama evening at Roosevelt High School at 8 p m. Friday will include a one : act farce, "The Mystery of Mouldy Manor” by Ted West gate, presented by the Roose velt Thespians Troupe 2029. The second half of the pro gram will consist of musical selections by the Roosevelt band, orchestra, ninth grade girls glee club and choir. Surplus Food Going To Summer Camps Br the Allocated Frees The Agriculture Department plans to make available to non-profit summer camps this year some of the foods now used in the school lunch pro gram. Such summer camps now re ceive surplus dairy products but the department said it will make available this summer dried eggs, peanut butter,! canned pork and can ned chopped meat. FM Stations ! Whatever happened to Ingrid Bergman’s television version of “Hedda Gabler” that CBS an nounced as a special for this past season if a sponsor could be found? Apparently, none was. It probably will turn up sooner or later. Two seasons back NBC announced it would produce a special show starring David Brinkley called “Our Man in Washington.” The series of which it was to be a part collapsed before season’s end. But the idea remained alive: NBC now is thinking about an hour special starring David Brinkley for next sea son. Title: “Our Man in Washington.” On the basis of a pilot film, made to sell a series, NBC has received a "commendation” for its forthcoming “Mr. Novak” from the president of the Na tional Education Association. The dramatic series, to start in the fall, concerns a high school teacher and already has approval that Eve Arden never won during all of her years as “Our Miss Brooks.” Recommended tonight: Dick Powell Theatre, NBC, 9:30- 10:30 (ESTi—Charles Bickford and a big cast in “The Old Man and The City,” a drama about revenue. June Allyson is hostess on the show. CHANNEL CHUCKLES —By Bil Keane “Mother, please!
