Van Wyck Brooks Dies; Critic of U. S. Literature BRIDGEWATER, Conn., May 3 (AP). —Van Wyck Brooks, who died yesterday, helped up root old literary standards in the first part of the century and then discovered the "usa ble past” in American letters. The critic, literary historian and biographer died at 77 In his white frame house in this tiny community. Mr. Brooks created a stir in 1915 with the publication of "America’s Coming of Age," a kind of manifesto for young writers who could not accept the traditional belief that lit erature must serve moral ends. In the book, Mr. Brooks said he found that “something had always been wanting (in Amer ican literature), that a certain density, weight and richness, a certain poignancy, a something far more deeply Interfused, is simply not there." Continued Criticisms In other early works—“ The Ordeal of Mark Twain" and “The Pilgrimage of Henry James”—Mr. Brooks continued his criticisms of American cul ture. After a four-year period of mental depression spent in hos pitals, Mr. Brooks di dhis ma jor work. His five-volume “Ma ke r s and Finders: A History of the Writer In America. 1800-1915" was a mamouth undertaking. In it he tried to show that American writers did not have to look to Europe for their lit erary heritage; that they had a rich, "usable” tradition in their own land. The first volume, “The Flowering of New England,” won the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for history and became a best seller. Some critics of Mr. Brooks’ work said it was overly roman tic in its glorification of Amer ica’s literary past. He count ered by accusing modem writ ers of lacking a capacity for sentiment. Urges Tenderness “Unless we cultivate tender ness,” he asked, “what will be come of a human world that is now as red as nature in tooth and claw?" The son of a New York stock broker, Mr. Brooks completed four years’ work at Harvard in three years, spent a brief period as a newspaper reporter, then went to England to spend a year in the London slums, subsist- / A XuUTAR A ROME Z < / \ / \ Gawler’s New Funeral Home Serves all of the Metropolitan Area After a century of service in Downtown Washington, Joseph Gawler’s Sons has moved to a modern new funeral home in the heart of Northwest Washington . . .
