A-20 Sports SQUAD WILL HAVE TO TAKE FIELD AGAIN 'Operation Deer' Cuts Quantico's Herd by One By WHEELER JOHNSON G*me count* by wardens at the Marine Corps School* at Quantico Indicated there were more than 6.00# deer roaming the 57,000 acres open for hunt ing on the reservation. With this In mind, a small squad of hunters started out on opening day with the greatest expectations that before night fall the herd would be reduced. And so It was. When Opera tion Deer was over through the squad's efforts, the herd num bered 5,990. Since Capt. Bill Windsor, who is Quantico's chief warden, feels that the herd should be trimmed by at least 1.000 to maintain It in top condition there must be a se quel to this story. The squad has got to get in action again before the season closes. Choosing Leader Is Easy Comdr. Heinrich Heine, ÜBN, retired, automatically became our CO for the expedition. He had served at the base and aft er his retirement in 1961 gave much of his time in helping the conservation projects that have made Quantico distinguished in this field. The commander knows almost every foot of the rugged area, and with his lead ership failure was unthinkable. Then, too. the expedition had a captain along—Capt. Homer Richardson, commander of the Metropolitan Police Depart ment’s fourth precinct. Rich is a veteran deer hunter and the woods of Quantico aren’t new to him. The expedition could have had a quartermaster corps, since Johnny Mandls, the Mar ket Inn’s mercurial driving force was along. But he was destined for bigger things. He got the only deer. The chief scouts were a tire less duo, John Dudley of Grove ton, Va., a long-time deer hunter, and Bterlon Hutchins, manager of the Palls Church Bowling Centex, who haunts the woods as often as he can during deer season. It ain’t. It's a speed boat race, dad, held on a 4-mile triangular course in California on Salton Sea. a below-sea-level salt water lake. Anyone with an outfit 13 to 25 feet In length, either out board or inboard powered, can try to qualify. This year 131 entries were pared down to the' 80-boat starting field divided' evenly between outboards and inboards. Unless your rig can cavort down the straightaways at over 60 on a mixed chop of white crested waves 2 feet and high er, you better stay on the beach ’cause this desert rooster tail fracas Is the wildest competi tive speed event since chariot racing. It combines a little bit of a lot of other sports: diving, flying, trampoline jumping, tight rope walking. ** * * You may think I’m billdlng up to the snapper that I was a big hero and won the event. About this time I heard a patter of little feet in the woods across the cheek from my stand. Sure enough, there was a small doe. probably from; the spooked bunch sighted by i Dudley. But she was at least 75 { yards away and shielded by the trunks of a close copse of sap lings. I didn't think I could get a clean shot and rather than wound her, I let her go on; her way. Only a few moments later I heard a couple of shots down the line where Capt. Richard son was stationed. “Well, there goes the doe,” I thought. Buck Is Tricky A little later Heine came by | and began to call us In. He i thought it was time to shift i base. As we walked up to Rich ardson's stand we inquired about his luck. Rich says he fired twice at the buck and on the second shot it went down and never stirred. He was so certain it was a clean kill he never bothered to go to it. New Base Chosen Heine, in hunting for a trail, saw a big buck with a fine rack disappear through the woods and we figured that Rich’s pumpkin ball probably had creased the buck and stunned. Then the wiley old fellow played possum for a little while and slipped away. After spreading maps of the area out on the hood of a car, Heine chose a new base of op erations. This time we went to Training Area 12, and were to deploy along the North Branch Bottom. Heine and Dudley were going to make a wide swing through the woods while the rest of us took stands along an old tank trail. Hutchins and Mandls had just left me on a stand atop a slight rise and had headed down the tank trail. They hadn't gone 30 yards when I saw them both freeze as they i came opposite a draw. Mandis i cut down, and then I saw the : deer. It ran right past them.
