Viet Cong Forces Strike 8 Outposts Near Saigon TEN HIEP, Viet Nam, Nov. 23 (AP).—The pace of Com munist guerrilla attacks has risen swiftly on this battlefield of canals and rice paddy fields only 40 miles north of Saigon. One after another, eight | government outposts were hit; Thursday. The Viet Cong guer- i rillas captured large numbers of United States-supplied weap ons, killed defenders and drove many others into the paddy fields. The Viet Cong moved almost to the gates of Mytho. head quarters of the Viet Namese 7th Division. This forced the 7th to strike out from the nor mally quiet town and disperse the guerrillas, "to give us some elbow room.” as a United States military adviser put it. So hot is the action that United States armed helicopters have had to double as flying ambulances to bring out the | wounded. Helicopters are aver aging eight flying hours a day, 1 far more than ever before. The Viet Cong’s object ap pears to be to discredit the military regime that toppled | President Ngo Dinh Diem. The tempo of guerrilla attacks has been rising ever since he was overthrown November 1. An American spokesman an nounced in Saigon today that South Viet Namese government forces lost 641 men killed, wounded or captured in the week Just closed. He put losses of the Communist guerrillas in the same period at 639. in a b&seryent in the 1400 block of Corcoran street N.W. after firing at a group of children in an alley. A 30-minute attempt by De tective Burwell and Pvt. Kame gay to coax the man into sur rendering failed and police fired a barrage of tear-gas grenades into the basement. Despite this, the citation de clared. the man remained in the basement, continuing to shout wild threats. The two officers made another attempt to talk to the armed man. who emerged into the alley but kept both po licemen covered with his shot gun. The three walked through the alley to Thirteenth street N.W. At this point, the citation noted. Inspector Mo wry. rea lizing the peril of two officers, cautiously approached the man from behind and tackled him. The three policemen then dis armed the man. who later was hospitalized for mental ob servation.
