For years both of us were looking out at the world under the wrong eye brows. You’ll just have to take my word for it that mine are vastly Improved. But for real visual proof just check some of the “before” photographs of the pretty Empress, and those taken after her visit to Alda Grey, the beauty scien tist In the Beverly Wllshlre Hotel, when she and the Shah of Iran visited the United States. Alda (not Ayda but just like the opera) Grey Is the woman who opened Madame Nhu’s eyes to a new world of beauty. Said Aida to us: "Her eyes were heavily made up like Japanese women. I gave her real Viet Namese eyes, and her daughter, too.” The Grey scrapbook Is filled with pictures of real royalty and the Hollywood variety, glowingly Inscribed to her. When she reshaped the Empress of Iran’s eyebrows a female bodyguard was breathing down her back, she said. "The clicking of the automatic tweezers seemed to worry her. I’m used to VIPs,” she says In her well - modulated voice with barely a trace of a charming French accent. Foreign Trade Right now Alda Orey Is busy as can be not only with her coemetics business, which finds her shipping creams, lotions and beauty aids to such places as Pakistan and even Samoa, but with her two beauty spas for men. For eight years now she has been selling coemetics to men. It all started when the husbands of many women, including some of the world’s moet glamorous screen stars, began using their wives’ prep arations. Right now one of the hottest men’s coemetic items la Blue Sno. It’s a skin bracer. “Men have skin prob lems, too. My men’s line Is called Mr. X. I have a deep pore cleanser, a mint masque for oily skin, eye oil, and a specially blended blemish cover for them, to mention a few,” she told us. Cary Grant, we found out, is a user of the Blue Sno, though Mrs. Grey didn’t tell us. “I cant afford to tell you the names of all the big male stars who come to the spa or come In for facials before they go on an Important job au d 111 o n,” she added. The entrance to the men’s spa Is on El Camlno street around the comer from her Wil shlre boulevard salon filled with French and Italian an tique screens, marble tables, and mirrors. It’s off limits for females. "We can fix them up In two hours, or the men can spend half a day getting a sauna, a facial, body mas sage. a pedicure, and a mani cure. Men are waking up to fytedtf/fcjtfjhdetetf of all watches -for Patek Philippe is perfection in timing. A Grandmother Alda Grey Is a woman who plainly loves her work. She is a grandmother, and her hus band Is a leading attorney. She’s got two laboratories, one In New York and one In Paris, and Is constantly trav eling in search of new beauty ideas. By the first of the year she will have a book on the his tory of cosmetics published. Another booklet concentrat ing on yoga exercises for the face Is about ready for the presses. She’s always looking at people and wishing she could do something to their faces. After thiry-flve years In the beauty business It’s second nature with her to say things that are full of hope and help for those who want to listen. "I get some women In here who tell me how I should make them up. When that happens I just put down the lipstick or the eyebrow pencil and that’s it,” she says quietly without any hysterics. Here are some of Alda’s beauty secrets for men and women in her own words: No Streaks Women past forty should not streak their hair. Young hair, and an old face do not go together. As a woman ages she should gradually go back to the natural color of her hair. "Let’s face It a wo man can’t go blond because they have more fun.” she continued. t Makeup Is an optical illu sion. Rainbow eyes are out. If you have fabulous Jewels and you want to play up to them for a special occasion, then you can use emerald or turquoise eye shadow. But eyeliner and mascara and the subtle beige, brown and sable eye shadows are newer. Eye shadow must be a tint not paint. Your eyebrows do not be long to your hair. They are not called “highbrows.” If that were the case why not bleach eyelashes? Eye makeup Is not meant for teenagers. It was meant for women to restore the brightness and glow of youth. I hold “Make Down” classes for teenagers. Women should pencil in their brows before tweezlng. Otherwise they don’t know what they are doing. All downward lines are ag ing. We are fighting gravity all the time. Men can fight age by simply darkening their eye brows. I have a do-it yourself kit that will tint them. It doesn’t matter that their hair Is gray If their eyebrows aren’t washed out. I never tweeze a man’s eyebrows. But we do cut and shape shaggy eyebrows. The eyebrow line I have developed for many women, Is a blend of the French and Italian brow lines of women. Italian wom en’s brows are too promi nent, very matriarchal look ing sometimes. French wom en's eyebrows are often too excited going UP at all kind of angles. I calmed them both down and the American result Is a winged brow which many say looks very Groucho Marx. American women take their beauty too much for granted. They need to devote more time to caring for their skins rather than just put ting on preparation after preparation.
