LOVE AND LAUGHTER “Have you ever noticed," writes one of our readers, "that women who like to sew are for the most part happy women?” I remember hearing someone say, when I was ad miring some gorgeous tapestry made by the nuns, “that since they didn’t have children they had put their crea tive abilities Into these works of art" She went on to say she had once stopped to see a friend and wanted to borrow a needle to sew on a button. "But she couldn't find a needle! Imagine—a woman without a sewing box.” WeU, it’s hard to, really. How, at least, would a mother manage without a cabinet, box. or little cluttered room in which to keep the paraphernalia of the sewing that must be done? A woman and her needle. What a lovely, inevitable pair they have been since time began. Women who truly like to sew must feel the ancient harmonies that go back, back even beyond the Bible, into the tents and caves of the first human families that had to be clothed But if a woman doesn’t LIKE to sew, look out! My mother was such a woman, and everybody shuddered when she drove herself to the sewing machine. The machine seemed to sense It, for it balked and kicked and both of them suffered—audibly. My husband's mother was bom with needle in hand; she sang as she whipped out garments for her grand children; and her oldest granddaughter happily inherited that love. I’m afraid I’m like my mother—allergic to all but absolutely essential sewing. Lyrics for Everyday Living DECORATOR Glass is for April, It goes with daffodils And violets just soaking In the damp, dusky hills. Silver is for summer — It cools the lush green, And supports the heavy roses, So gracious and serene. Summer goes with silver, . April goes with glass, November calls for copper And brorue, and brass. I’m getting down my candlesticks And rubbing bright the bowls For branches and berries and gaudy vegetables. For when the fire is snapping And apples scent the hall, Bronte and brass and copper Prolong the golden fall. M. M.
