A German named Von Behring discovered the anti-toxin for
'diphtheria. " -
A Frenchman named Roux put it to
practical use.
These men gave their work freely to
humanity. "It 'isn't patented, nor copy
righted, nor trade-marked.
American concerns which manufac
ture thjs anti-toxin pay no royalty or
license fee.
i Anti-toxin is used in tubes of 5,000
units each. That amount, tube and
syringe included, cfost only 60 cents to
Five thousand units often save a
Jiuman life. If the diphtheria infection
is on the tonsils only 3,000 units are us-
ually needed, vlf the. nose is infected the dose may be 15,000 units,
;-, If a child has been sick three days, 20,000 units are required.
-i But, whatever the amount needed, anti-toxin is almost a -sure
cure for diphtheria if given in time.
a ; All this has been known for 16 years. ,The, death rate has drop
ped wonderfully, but there shouldn't be any diphtheria death rate
, at all!
v Some cities and states give away anti-toxin freely, where it's
needed, to those who cannot afford to buy. The manufacturers sell
ft to those public officials at $1.00 a tube 40 cents of which is profit.
'-" But people who don't live where the free" anti-toxin is obtaln---'ableVor
who' feel squeaniish about accepting it, buy anti-toxin at the
drug store wheh the doctor orders it
V If ypur babj' js battling with diphtheria and the doctor orders
v anti-toxin, youjare going to .get it, at whatever cost if you have the
-t money to meet .that hold-up $7.50, or $15, or $22.50, or $30. Many
-J people haven't.' That's why many children :antl grown folks still
die. needlessly ofdiphtheria. Maybe yqur wages are only $2 a day,
or, God help youi only $1,25 a day. The price is the same, be you
lich, poor or destitute-r-$6.90 profit )n -every 60-cent tube!
t Who's to blames?1 It lies between, manufacture? and druggist.
One of -those two," banking on your fear, and despair; robs you.
- And itraore than robbery IT IS OFTEN MURDER!.
