Commission. You know all of them well enough to know that they
are men and women of real eminence in this community.
Well, those eminent men and women are also brave. They have
shown courage that not a newspaper in Chicago that lives on adver
tising dare show.
They have made a report to the people of Chicago that has
never reached the people, because NONE OF THE BIG DAILIES
DARES TO PUBLISH THE REPORT. -
And because of this cowardice the general public doesn't know
what is in the report, and copies of it are about the hardest thing in
Chicago to get hold of. Men who have had influence enough to get
a copy are afraid to lend it for fear they wont get it back.
That report says :
"THE CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATE IS MADE THAT
THERE ARE AT LEAST FIVE THOUSAND PROFESSION
AL PROSTITUTES IN CHICAGO. MEDICAL MEN AF
FIRM THAT THE AVERAGE LIFE OF THESE UNFOR
TUNATE WOMEN FOR SERVICE IS FROM FIVE TO
SEVEN YEARS. THUS IT FOLLOWS THAT FRESH YOUNG
GIRLS MUST BE CONTINUALLY SUPPLIED TO TAVKE
THE PLACES OF THESE WHO DIE OR ARE RENDERED
USELESS BY DISEASE. WHERE DO THESE NEW VIC
TIMS COME FROM? IS THE DEMAND SUPPLIED?
"FROM THE MASS OF EVIDENCE WE LEARN THAT
THE PATH WHICH LEADS DOWN TO DISEASE AND
DEATH IS CONSTANTLY FILLED WITH YOUNG RE
CRUITS WHO GO STUMBLING ON, BLINDED BY THE
WANT OF NECESSITIES OF LIFE, BY A DESIRE FOR
SOME SIMPLE LUXURIES, BY IGNORANCE, BY VAItf
HOPES, BY BROKEN PROMISES, BY THE DECEIT AND
LUST OF MEN."
The Day Book has already 'dwelt upon the fact that tht Vice
Commission has fearlessly traced the connection-between the Social
Evil in Chicago and economic conditions.
As we firmly believe that nothing but an aroused public con-
science will bring about any permanent correction of conditions, afid
that, after all, that conscience is strongest and Jean be easiest aroused
among the working classes, The Day Book will continue' to publish
information that will help to arouse that conscience.
We do not expect from political parties much relief. Political?''
parties are too generally ruled by politicians who are more 'or Ies
intimately related, in one way or another, 'with the MEN WHO
MAKE OF VICE A COMMERCIALIZED BUSINESS.
And the history of political" parties proves that they givp the
people no more than an aroused public conscience demands.
