hateful cousin, "a cross-eyed

"Guess I'll hook up," shouted
Uncle Amos. "Chore time, now."
Peter and Uncle Amos strolled
off toward the barn. In the shad
ows of the old doorway Uncle
Amos' hand came down affection
ately upon Peter's shoulder.
At the horse-block Uncle Amos
waited for Aunt Miranda. As
she sank heavily beside him he
reached over and tucked the dust
robe about her knees. "Come and
see us, everybody," he called.
Moved by an impulse Alice step-'
ped between the wheels, "Come
and see us," she said, soon."
Uncle Amos studied the mare's
ears for an instant, then cast a
side glance at Aunt Miranda.
"Well, since you've asked us, I'll
be blamed if we don't," he said.
"Get up, Kit!"
Peter followed Uncle Amos
and Alice spoke hurried but cor-,
The hosses broke into a trot.
"Goodby," called everyone.
"I just love Grace,"came Elea
nor's voice from the back seat.
"Father's folks are all right,"
asserted Peter, jr. "I had five
pieces of cake."
"Uncle Amos loaned me that
money, Alice," said PetCr.
"What?" she exclaimed in suiw
prise. . r
