Is it possible that the "Irony of
Fate" will compel us to follow
China instead of lead the way.
We have called China a
"heathen nation," "uncivilized,"
"asleep," and many other titles
that indicated either an unregen
rate air decadent state. We have
ever and anon blustered about
our progressive western civiliza
tion; our superiority over all
things Oriental. Is all this true,
or are we ourselves asleep as to
the real greatness and progres
sive character of the Mongolian
people? We are willing to admit
that China played with gunpow
der centuries before "Christians"
jurdered each other with it.

ies before Gutenburg was born.
China knew the mariner's com
pass ages before Columbus
"found the land," or "landlord
ism" stole it.
China, in spots, put the "pro
tective policy" into practice long
before political pirates tried to
dub it "The American Policy."
.She did it by filling up some of
her harbors with rocks that her
people might have work, "lighter
ing" the cargoes by carrying
them ashore on their backs.
And now comes a current edi
torial statement that: "Presi
dent Yuan declares the single tax
will be put into operation
throughout the vast Chinese re
public." It" was not China that first
"discovered," "invented" or pro
mulgated the single tax.
That was done, in its modern
form, by OUR OWN Henry
George. HE was an AMERI
CAN, dyed in the wool, from the
Dr. W. E. Macklin, for some
twenty years a missionary in
China, was the man who trans
lated Henry George's "Progress
and Poverty" into the Chinese for
their local consumption. This
was about twenty years ago. So
they have had some time to as
Dr. Macklin negotiated the sur
render, under fire, of Nankin. His
great influence prevented much
bloodshed and pillage. He is a
personal friend of Sun Yat Sen,
first provisional president of the
Chinese republic. When Sun
Yat Sen, who is a graduate of
Harvard, started in to translate
"Progress and Poverty" he
stopped his work on finding Dr.
Macklin had already done so, but
he helped in its distribution.
The single tax entered China
from America. Henry George
was an American. Dr. Macklin
is"an American. America is ahead
of China in some things, anyway.
Just to Look At.
