alleging that some of the women
received as low as $4 a week and
none over $10 or $11. The men
are underpaid, compared to other
shops.
Jacob Potofsky, a member of
the cutters' and trimmers' com
mittee that asked the tailors to
strike, was arrested when the lat
terwalked out.
In Maxwell Street court this
morning no one appeared to pros
ecute the striker and he was re
lased. It is charged by the tailors
that a man. supposed to be the
manager of the shop flourished a
revolver when the strike commit
tee appeared and they, say that
Fototsky was arrested on tnis
mon'b complaint.
It is expected that every Kup
penheimer shop will be tied up
shortly by the strike. In the last
big garment workers' strike it
took four weeks to get all the
workers out, and it may take as
long this time.
The strike, however, will be
confined to the Kuppenheimer
shops, -where 4,000 garment work
ers are employed. Few of these
belong to the union, and they can
only be called out by appeals and
through a realization that if they
stand together they have a better
chance of securing better, work
ing conditions and living wages.
Leaders of the garment work
ers declare they are better forti
fied now to handle a strike than
they were in 1911, as they control
-many shops, and the workers
here will contribute to aid those
on the streets. In addition, thte
is the busy season in the tail6ring
trade, and many of the strikers
have gone to work in other shops
at better wages than they ob
tained from Kuppenheimer.
