"So long as I remain a candi
date on the Republican ticket I
feel in honor bound to support
Republican nominees" meaning
Whereupon Medill McCormick
wept salty tears and said it was a
sad world, and that there would
need to be a third party in Illinois.
The reason for McCormick's
agitation was the presence in Chi
cago of Sen. Joseph M. Dixon of
Montana, Roosevelt leader.
. .Dixon came here with definite
instructions from Oyster Bay,
which maybe ran something like
"Find out what these political
jellyfish who are trying to run my
campaign in Illinois are about,
arid then get the real progressives
of Illinois started."
What Dixon intends to do, he
made plain as soon as word of
Gov. Deneen's action was carried
"All right," he said, "there will
be a third party ticket in Illinois
in November from governor
And he added: "In times of
peace the pussyfoot politician
may succeed, but in this fight
everybody's got to come out in
ben. JJixon will suck around
Chicago for a few more days to
see that there's no backsliding
among the near-progressives.
But isn't it a dickens of a mess
for ithe Tribune to get into? Now
it either has to repudiate its own
private governor or repudiate
