PADDY LAVIN SAYS MAYBE THE AMERICAN WILL
GIVE MURDERER UP TOTHE-POLICE
How tthe. Hearst newspapers
dominate the police force and
how far they can go tp- protect
one of their hired thugs 4vhen he
commits murder was clearly
proven today
Last night the driver of an
American newspaper wagon com
mitted cold-blooded murder.
George Hehr, a teamster, was
driving his wagon on 'Desplaines
street. As he reached West
Adams a string of five American
wagons started across Des
plaines. Hehr tried' to drive between
the first and second American
wagons. The driver of the second
American wagon cursed Hehr
and drovfe his wagon crashing in
to Hehr's.'
, There was a brief interchange
of words and then the American's
thug drew a revolver and fired
five times at Hehr. 0ne of the
shotsstruck Hehr in the abdo
men. He died shortly afterward
atrthe County Hospital-.
..There was no excuse for the
shooting.' It was cold-blooded,
deliberate murder. , -
It occurred in the Desplaines
street police station district. Po
lice Captain Meagher is in charge
of this station.
Meagher, being a decent police
official, wanted to go out and get
the murderer. He was hampered
by orders from headquarters,
which put Police Captain Paddy
Lavin in authority over every
other police official in any case
connected with the trust news
papers. Meagher nevertheless found
out the numbers of the American
wagons in the case and gave this
information to Paddy Lavin.
Then this conversation took place
between Lavin and Meagher:
Lavin: "It's all right. The
American will give up the men
who were on the wagon from
which the shooting was done at
the coroner's inquest tomorrow.1'
Meagher: "I don't want the
men who were 'on the wagon
from which the shooting was
done,' I want the men who did
the actual shooting."
Lavin: I dont know if the
American would be willing to
give the mup."
Meagher: "This happened in
my Idistrict. These men who did
the shooting should be under ar
rest" Lavin: "Well, the American
