THE DAY BOOK ft 500 S. PEORIA ST. TEL. MONROE 353 Vol. 1, No. 275 Chicago, Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1912 One Cent WHAVS THE MATTER WITH CHICAGO? Another thing the matter with Chicago is that the big daily newspapers don't give the people the truth. Take the Hehr murder, where seven men employed by the Hearst newspapers are under arrest for the cold-blooded killing of an innocent citizen neither the American, Examiner, Tribune, News, Journal, Post, Record-Herald nor Inter-Ocean printed the facts about this murder. Not one of them published the truth when Conductor Witt was murdered by newspaper thugs. The murderers of Hehr were not even arrested until State's Attorney Wayman threatened to arrest them if the police didn't. And Chief McWeeny's excuse for not arresting them was that he had paroled them in the custody of Andy Lawrence's lawyer. -And the murderers of Conductor Witt are not under arrest at all for thaf crinie. Edward Barrett, who was mixed up in the Witt murder, is now under arrest for the Hehr murder, but Charles Bar rett and Friedman arenjoying their freedom and are still work ing for the Hearst newspapers. For years the newspapers that are members of the local pub lishers press have employed- sluggers ; and although the sluggers of one newspaper slugged newsboys of another newspaper, it has been the practice for none of the trust newspapers to print anything about such slugging. It was only a few months ago that Judge Pettit, white lectur ing to a law class at the Kent College of Law, said that over 100 people had been killed by newspaper delivery vehicles in Chicago, and nothing printed about it in the papers. The Witt and IJehr murders are due directly to the fact that desperadoes and thugs in the employ of newspapers ' have been sworn in as deputies by officers of the law. Politicians and. officers of the law appear to be cowed by the newspapers, and permit the trust newspapers to do pretty much as they please in Chicago. Have YOtJ seen & truthful account of either the Witt or the Hehr murder in any one of the Chicago trust newspapers? Senator Lorimer charged that the trust press would, ruin any j.'&a-jwtfSwV.-2. ti ti.tA . -
