WEST HAMMOND DEATHS
Coroner Hoffman and. Coroner
Frank Smith, of Gary, are to
make a joint investigation into
West Hammond's house of death,
where John Messmaker and Esther-
Harrison met their deaths.
Place is the notorious resort of
Henry Foss. Fos,s has disap
peared from West Hammond.
The authorities there made ho ef
fort to keep track of him.
Virginia Brooks, the girl Re
former, is determined that there
shall be a thorough investigation.
She is being aided by M.rs. John
Messmaker, widow of theweal-
thy manufacturer who is known
to have been one victim of the
death house.
AFTER GROGAN AGAIN '
Barney Grogan, Democratic
boss" of the Eighteenth ward, was
cited to appear before Judge
Gemmill in the Desplaines street
court Tuesday, and show cause
why he should not be sentenced
for contempt of court today.
The charge against Grogan Js
involved. It was filed by Assist
ant State's Attorney Louis Pin
derski, a Republican.
The complaint charges that
there have beeri irregularities in
bonds which Grogan has signed
for the release of prisoners from
the Desplaines street-station.
The irregularities certainly ex
ist, but'they appear only to be
such as might occur through
oversight or carelessness. There
is no question that Grogan put
up property he did not possessor

STRIKE STILL IN AIR
The presidents of the street'
railways today admitted to the,
union, officials a compromise wage
agreement. t
The sub-committee of the
union withdrew from the joint
confefence at noon, and retired
to the Briggs house, there to de
cide whether or not to accept the
companies offer.
No hint of what the compan-5
ies' offer was leaked out. The
sub-committee of the union still
was considering the offer late this
afternQon.
