GET BUSYHAM LEWIS!
Some time ago, J. Hamilton Lewis, Democratic candidate for U. S. senator, wrote a letter to Mayor Harrison asking for a commission to investigate wages paid in department stores,, mer cantile establishments and fac tories. So far there has been no answer to that letter. And nothing more has been heard from J. Ham Lewis. The Day Book suggests that a man running for U. S.' senator ought not to start anything he can't finish. So we suggest that Lewis demand an answer to his letter. Say, Ham, why not build a fire under the mayor? You've start ed something; now go on through with it. CLAIM LAKE FRONT And now the Indians are try ing to horn in on that much dis puted lake front of ours. Suit was begun late this after noon against the I. C, Michigan Central and Burlington railroads and the South Park Commission ers by Frank Eli and 3,500 other Indians for possession of'the land along Lake Michigan from Fifty first street to the Chicago river. The Indians are the descend ants of -the Pottawatamie, Chip pewa and Ottawa tribes, now liv ing in this state, Indiana and Michigan. The whole 3,500 are named in the complaint The claim of the Indians, is based on a treaty their ancestors made with the United States at the end of the. wan which gave the Indian tribes -the -right to prop erty north of the Ohio and east" of the Mississippi. The Indians say t the government bought-all the land back except the strip along the lake front. The strip of land reaches bad! from the lake -front from 50 feet to half a mile. It is only worth about $50,000,000, more or less. ' The railroads got the land by- state grant. The Indians say the state didn't have the right to . make the grant. v The attorneys for the Indians are John M. Lonergan and Joel W..Spe'dems. They say they hav$ Worked for four years getting evi- -dence to support the claihi of the Indians. - 'HELD TO GRAND JURY-b Claude Russell, 28, 1255 Wi -t Madison St., was held to grand jury this afternoon by Judge Tori rison, charged with highway rob-, bery. On Sept. 17, Russell, with three others, is alleged to have held up and robbed Mike PerlJ man, .48, 25 N. Curtis st., of $12? The men were frightened away by -two shots fired by Mrs. Lola Conley, 23 N. Curtis st., who wit nessed the hold-up. Bonds fixed at $2,000. , TAKES OWN LIFE i Mrs. Jessie Epstein, 281352; South Sangamon St., committed suicide in her home at noon to day by slashing her left arm three ' times with a razor.
