A mass meeting inthe West Side auditorium last night au thorized the executive committee of the union to call a general strike. The executive, committee is to meet at 1145 Blue Island avenue between 5 and 6 tonight. The Custom Ladies' Tailors' Association of the South Side locked out 300 of the union em ployes last spring. All efforts to come to an agreement with the association "since have failed. o o BUSINESS AGENT JAILED John J. Roberts, 24, 211 N. Maplewood av., business agent for Stone, Lime and Cement Teamsters' Union, was arrested this morning on complaint of Max Gould, 729 W. 14th pi., of the C. E. Anderson Excavating Co., Lake and Sheldon sts Gould says that several days ago while passing one another in rigs at Fulton and Clinton sts., Roberts threw a bulb filled with acid at him. He says the acid hit him on the neck and burned him badly, and that Roberts' brother, William, hit him with a plank. This morning at Madison and Desplaines sts. The Catholic women of America are planning a nation-wide war on white slavery. This is the result of the dis closures made by Dr. Mary O'Brien Porter, of Chicago, at the National Conference of Cath olic charities in session here. Dr. Porter minced no words. From her professional and charit able work in Chicago she has come to know something of the true conditions. She was not affaid to tell them. . "pirls are sold into white slav ery as sheep are sold in the mar ket in Chicago," she said. "The" extent of the white slave trade is almost beyond belief. "Over 2,300 Chicago men are today making their living from the earnings of unfortunate wo men. It is a very profitable busi ness for the men." The great conference of women stared at the speaker aghast. Then Dr. Porter said that if any- one doubted her statements she could prove them. The nation-wide war ons tne white slavers is the result.
