MINISTERS AND THE VICE CRUSADE
A number of ministers, undoubtedly with the best of purposes,
are taking an active hand in the agitation for a crusade against vice
This is all right as far as it goes. But it doesn't go far enough.
The fight to save souls will undoubtedly go on forever, but it will
be more effective if it goes hand in hand with just as vigorous a fight
to save human bodies.
Every day men, women and children are fighting against pov
erty. WhenMabor is fighting for better working conditions and a
living wage, it's- fighting humanity's fight against poverty, vice,
disease and crime.
When labor falls away and loses interest in the .church, it is
not because there is anything wrong with religion, but because there
is something wrong with its ministry.
There is something wrong in social conditions when able-bodied
and intelligent men, who are willing to work, either can't get work,
or when they do work can't earn enough to decently support a
There is something wrong in social conditions when children
have to leave school at a tender age and work in stores and factories
to help support the family.
There is something radically wrong when young men shun
matrimony because they think they can't earn enough to get married
and raise children.
There is something disgracefully and criminally wrong, when
young girls are required to work for wages that will not insure them
a decent living and a decent Jife.
Ther is something wrong when the wealth of the country is
concentrated in the hands of the few, and the jnany are reduced to

political parties ignore the vital problems of everyday life, and give
to the oppressed nothing more substantial than empty platform
There is something wrong with the minister whose church is
passed by the men who work. If He went down among his brethren
who are fighting against poverty,. disease and death, and became in
fact his brother's keeper if he practiced the beautiful human phil
osophy which he. so eloquently preaches why, then his brethren
vvou!d come to him, and the church would be restored to its wonted
. place in the affections of struggling humanity.
