EVIDENCE MAKES QUITMAN'S REFORM ASSOCIATION
MORE AND MORE ONE GRAND FIZZLE
. Facts tending to show that the
iWbmen's Protective League is
not the reform agency it pretends
to be are multiplying.
Louis Quitman, director and
sole manager of the affairs of the
league, never left the Examiner,
of which he formerly was star
reporter.
Quitman walked out of the
Hearst chop suey joint into the
directorship of the Women's Pro
tective League, and when he did
so he got a furlough from the
Examiner.
Furthermore, Quitman has
changed his views on vice and the
tenderloin of Chicago most radi
cally in a surprisingly short space
of time.
It is only a few months since
Quitman, under the pen- name, of
Robert O. Harland, had published
a book which he entitled "The
Vice Bondage of a Great City or
The Wickedest City in the
World."
Here is a quotation from the
prelude to this book written by
Quitman :,
Thcreign of vice, graft and po
litical corruption. Expose of the
monstrous vice trust. Its person
nel. Graft by the vice trust from
the army of sin for its protection.
Ascore of forms of vice graft.
Horrifying revelations of the life
of the scarlet woman. .New
lights on white slavery. Protect
ed gambling and the blind police.
The inside story of an enslaved
police department.
Also remedies to cure the mu
nicipal evil that, in one city alone,
fills the pockets of not more than
ten vice lords with $15,000,000 an
nually, made from the sins of
50,000 unfortunate men and wo
men ; an evil that is blasting our
nation's decency and prosperity
and is eating into the very vitals
of our republic.
Some of the concluding para
graphs of the book are as follows :
Overthrow the dynasty of vice !
Overthrow the corrupt political
system that established and today
sustains the vice trust!
In place of dives let us have gar
dens; in the place of dens of in
famy, playgrounds for a growing
generation.
The revelation has been made.
Now is the time of expurgation.
From the wickedest city in the
world, Chicago may become,
through persistent and systema
tic attack on its vice trust
The city beautiful of all na
tions. And these paragraphs were
written by Louis Quitman, the
man who for the past few weeks
has been appearing before the al
dermanic investigation commit
tee pleading with (hat committee
