Webb, the real police work was
going on out at the Hyde Park
This work lay in the effort to
find out what makes Mike Cas
sello tick the way he does.
Cassello is the gent who was
'"as a man in a dream" while
Webb was beating up and mur
dering Detective Hart.
Cassello also is the gent who
has told five separate conflicting
stories, none of which agrees with
the stories told by his wife or
Pellc Hastings, of what happen
c.l in the auto bandit love flat at
1 '7 South Michigan avenue be
fore and after the murder of Hart.
This is not the first time that
Mr. Cassello has been the subject
of police inquiry.
March 31, 1911, Levi A. Raven,
an eld man who ran a curiosity
shop at 1425 South State street,
was found murdered in the rear
of his store.
Cassello was arrested as a sus
pect. It was shown that he owed
the old man over $3,000, and
there were several other circum
stances that pointed toward Cas
sello. Cassello got out of it by giving
an alibi. He produced witnesses
who swore he had been at the
circus at the lime of the murder.
Late today State's Attorney
Hoyne said Cassello had made a
jiew statement which cleared up
several points in the case.
This is the usual thing to say
and does not hurt anyone, but it
might be true.
Shortly after Hoyne cleared up
the mystery, Captain Lavin con
sented to do so, too. But he
would not say how it was cleared
up, so the same goes for him as
went for Hoyne.
Still later, when the police saw
that no one was taking them very
seriously, they decided to have
Webb captured, and locked up in
a nice little cell. That was about
1 :30 o'clock. Since then, the
police have had a wholly imagin
ary Webb locked up in every sta
tion in Chicago.
And when all is said and done,
the odds are that Webb is still in
Chicago, and that he is getting so
mad about all this newspaper no
toriety that he'll walk into one of
the police stations soon and ask
for a warrant for the arrest of
Hoyne and Lavin for annoying
