" ONLY WHAT HE ASKED FOR
Eleven o'clock was the hour. The young la'' '
was both bored and tired, for young Brown's preo
.ence was almost as distasteful to her as were his
attentions. But, try though she would, sha could
think of no means of getting rid of him.
Half an hour passed. Still young Brown saton,
talking, talking, talking; then he turned the conver
sation to the question of his health.
"Yes, Miss Mollie," he" said, "I know I'm not
strong, and that sort of thing. In fact, if the truth
be told, it's only my nerve which keeps me up at all."
The opportunity for retort was obvious. But
Miss Mollie, being a nice girl, deliberately abstained
from making use of it, until suddenly the temptation
"Well, Mr. Brown." she remarked sweetly,
"that's funny. It's beenSkeeping me up, too!"
And the young man departed slowly, sadly, for
ever and a day.
x THE OLD, OLD CAME
At 9 p. m. they were seated at opposite ends of
the couch. At 9:30 they were slightly nearer to each
other. At 10 o'clock they were only three feet apart.

"Has your father gone to bed?" he asked.
"Has your mother gone to bed?"
"Do you think your little brother Is under the
The young man heaved a sigh of relief.
"It's your move," he said.
JUST HIS LUCK
"Have a cigar, old man? "
"Thanks; don't mind If I do."
"Good!" sighed the other, as a huge cloud of
smoke poured from his friend's mouth, and curled
gracefully up into the air. "That's a relief!"
"What's a relief?"
"Ah," chuckled the donor of the weed, "that
cigar is the last of a box my wife gave me fbr a
birthday present I've palmed off all the rest upon
my friends!" .
"And this is the last of 'em. You silly juggins,
I was hoping to get most of that box! You see
they're the sort I always smoke. Your wife asked
me to pick them out for her!"
