REAL PATRIOTISM WILL INSPIRE US IN THE
UNITED STATES OF THE WORLD
The Great Human Brotherhood Now Divided by Imagm

Fight Like Devils The Meaning of a Na .
tional Flag Isn't Always the Same.
BY N. D. COCHRAN
YOU were taught, of course, that patriotism means love of country.
All of us have been taught that. We have been taught to love OUR flag,
just as the Jap, the Englishman, the Frenchman and the German has been
taught to love HIS.
But have you ever really analyzed patriotism?
I am a patriot by inheritance. In fact, I have the right 'to wear the
button of the Loyal Legion. Not that I ever did any fighting for my coun
try, but because my father happened to be an officer during the civil "war.
I don't know, however, how much of a patriot I would be myself if it meant
shouldering a gun. I might be a rank coward. One never can telL
But I heard so much about patriotism that I tried to fin out what it
really was. If I was going to be a patriot I wanted to be a real one, not!
merely one by inheritance. I had tried being a Republican by inheritance
and found that didn't work. Then I tried being a Democrat, but couldn't
discover any difference in myself.
Then I tried being an Independent and found I had to be independent
of the Independents. Everything seemed to split up in -factions and frac
tions. Anyhow, I didn't like the idea of "helonging" to anything less than
the whole thing. Now I'm in a party all by myself and it's the only one I
was ever in that didn't have factions.
So on that patriotism thing I found myself floundering. I -was ready to
love the flag all right whearl loved what it meant, but it didn't always mean
the same thing. For illustration, I don't think it means the same thing
floating over a drum-head court martial and white slavery in West Virginia. '
