According to the evolution theory,
before an individual attains to adult
life it must pass through phases rem
iniscent of the adult stage' of more or
fewer of its ancestors. A striking in
stance of this has appeared lately in
a young elephant from Sumatra,
aged about eighteen months. It dif
fers from the young in the typical
Indian species in possessing a hairy
coat of exceptional thickness for
an elephant. This hairiness is rem
iniscent of the time when the adult
was hairy throughout life and has
been named the mammoth. This
animal in days gone by roamed over
the continent of Europe in great
herds and its remains are commonly
