work occurred in New York the other day, but on this occasion no one was hurt. Four players stopped an equal distance from a pop fly, and it went for a hit. Collins and Fournier were two of the participants in this affair, which seems to prove there is a lack of leadership. One of the infielders should call the outfield plays when the ball is in doubtful territory. The man on the inner defense is in the - right position to gauge the fall of the ball. Walter Johnson pitched yesterday for Washington, and there wasn't a chance to win. Cal sent Clarence Smith in to start the game, and he lasted an inning and a third. Buck O'Brien came on next, and three runs were scored before he got the side out Ainsmith stole home for one of the tallies. Bill Lathrop, the Notre Dame col legian, then went to the mound for a little practice. Bill's performance was not hefty enough to warrant his appearance in a world's series, but he did act like a man who might be developed into a regular heaver. Only two hits were- scored on him in six innings, but he walked half a dozen blokes and stabbed one in the ribs with a swift shoot. Lathrop is a wild man, and has no delusions about his control. The first thing he told Callahan when he joined the team was that he lacked control. This admission made some thing of a hit with the manager, though he was naturally disappoint ed. He figured that if the youngster realized his own shortcomings he ' would work hard to overcome them. Lathrop is a good prospect and can undoubtedly be tamed down. Rader, another youngster, had a chance to perform after Washington took a top-heavy lead. He relieved Chappell in left field. Rader is natur ally a third baseman, but he snagged a pair of flies in the garden, and also clubbed a double, one of the three hits made by the Sox. Chappell will be back this afternoon. Collins may rest up for'tho Athletic series, Bodie performing in his stead. Johnson pitched but four innings to score his 11th straight win. Grif fith then took him out to save him, as the Nationals had a six-run marr Gavvy Cravath, slugging right fielder of the Phillies, who is leading the National League in home runs. gin. He allowed but one hit. Gallia, a recruit, was as great a puzzle, two bingles being made off him in five innings. Griff wound up the game with a team of subs in the field.
