THE LOST STRIKE
By R. P. S.
It was not man to man
That we fought the losing fight,
And lost to Poverty
The crying cause of Right
In the unequal war
With Mammon in his might!
It was not man to man,
And the fight was far from fair,
For our children cried for bread
And we found our larders bare.
Good God! Our children starved
'Twas more than we could bear!
And so the strike was lost,
And we went weeping back
To the work we hated so;
To tread the beaten track
Of labor that spells Death
Upon the profit-rack.
And yet our's was the right,
And he who runs may read
The gospel writ in flame
That cries the simple creed
Of human Brotherhood
Right, but we lost to greed!
