timate friend and appointee of Gov.
Sulzer, today recognized Lieut.-Gov.
Martin. H. Glynn as acting governor
of the state by reporting to him the
facts in connection with the escape
fjom Mattewan Asylum for the Crim
inal Insane of Harry Kendall Thaw.
Shortly after, Dr. Kieb, superin
tendant of Mattewan, called Glynn
on the long distance telephone with
a similar report. Both officials mere
ly repeated the known facts in the
case.
Riley has promised a sweeping in
vestigation of the case. He left here
for Mattewan at 3 o'clock this after
noon to examine all the officials of
the asylum.
"It seems strange to me that Thaw
was allowed to get away the way he
did," said Riley, today. "I am mak
ing no charge that money was used.
But it was somewhat peculiar that
events turned out as they have. The
customary reward has been offered
for his apprehension."
Riley had barely given out this
statement when a messenger from
Gov. Sulzer whispered in his ear.
Riley went immediately to the execu
tive chambers.
Friends of Riley'and Sulzer believe
Riley made a great tactical error in
recognizing Lieut.-Gov. Glynn by re
porting to him.
"I want to say this," said Riley,
when he returned from his confer
ence with Sulzer, "that Thaw's attor
neys were with him in the asylum on
Friday afternoon. They had their in
terview in private under an order
from the supreme court Thaw was
the only patient of the asylum hav
ing this privilege. Other patients see
their attorneys but only in the pres
ence of an agent of the asylum. I
am making no charge, but I believe
.that if Thaw bad not been given the
Pittsburgh, Pa. Roger O'Mara,
private detective, who has been in
the employ of Harry K. Thaw for
years, today declared that Thaw
would return to this, his home city,
and that he would not be molested
here.
Beacon, N. Y. Harold H. Barnum,
the Matteawan Asylum guard whom
Harry K. Thaw pushed aside in mak
ing his escape from that institution,
today, was taken to Poughkeepsie and
there arraigned before Justice More
hauser in the Supreme Court on
charges of bribery and negligence.
John Doe warrants were issued" at
Poughkeepsie for the five men who
helped Thaw to escape. The men
were here for several days last week,
staying at the Holland Hotel. Land
lord Gordon of the hotel has given
descriptions of the men. Rumors that
all five were desperate New York
gunmen have not been substantiated.

PLAN TO KILL PENN. R. R. DEAL
A committee of the Sokol Slovan
ska Lipa Gymnastic Association held
a meeting in the association's hall,
515 DeKoven street, Saturday night,
and laid plans to frustrate the pro
posed Pennsylvania railroad freight
elevated terminal proposition.
The committee, which will take
active steps in the immediate future,
is composed of: J. Lang, chairman;
Frank J. Bilek, secretary; John Ze
tina, treasurer; Irving J. Langer, as
sistant secretary; John Sianek, H.
M. Horek, J. J. Langer, J. Zawavil
and L. Fridrich.

analysis of the viscera of Jan de La
tour, for whose death Mrs. Wa"nda
de Latour is being held by the police.
