Buffalo, Aug. 26. A great assem
blage, of teachers, investigators, phy
sicians, dentists, sanitarians and
other public-spirited citizens from
every quarter of the globe are attend
ing the fourth, international congress
of school hygiene here.
This convention represents the
most elaborate effort ever made in
thin country toward improving the
health and efficiency of school chil
dren! The program for the wee,k includes
addresses and exhibits relating to the
conditions of the twenty million
school children in the United States,
some fifteen million of whom, accord
ing to recent statistics, are in need of
attention because of physical defects!
The object of the congress is to
'bring together men and women in
terested in the health of school boys
and girls and to make public the most
advanced means of improving pres
ent conditions.
Dr. Charles W. Eliot of Harvard
University is president of the con
gress. The secretary-general is
Thomas A. Storey, professor of hy
giene at the college of the City of
New York.
Surgeon General Chas. P. Stokes,
United States navy, will be one of
the principal speakers, discussing the
"Relation of Athletics to Health."
Mrs. S. S. Crockett, chairman of
the public health department of the
federation, and Mrs. Frank J. Shuler
of Buffalo, president of the New York
state federation, take an active part
in the women's session held in con
nection with the congress.
Good Health Hobbies of Hygiene
Modern attack on disease is being
centered upon the boys and girls of
the country!
The watchword of the new era of
right living is prevention rather than
The hobbies of modern medicine
are: Fresh air, pure water, recrea
tion and wholesome, plain food!
Physical health is the foundation
rock of education!
The modern public school system
is intended to teach children to eat,
breathe and walk correctly, as well as
to read, writ and spell!
It is asserted that 75 per cent of
the twenty million school children of
this country have physical defects!
The answer to the whole health
problem is publicity, co-operation,,
hard work and persistent establish
ment of hygienic reform measures in
the public schools and colleges!
These are some of the beliefs of the
world-wide delegation of the fourth
international school hygiene con
gress in Buffalo, August 25-30.
