goaL Automatic telephones alone will
make this possible. Manual (girl
operated) telephone are more costly
to operate as the system grows. Au
tomatic telephones are less expensive
to operate as the system grows.
Manual telephone service will be
uncommercial at 600,000 telephones.
Chicago will need 1,000,000 tele
phones to put one in every home by
1918. Manual service will cost five
cents a call even for big firms by 1918
at the present rate. '
Automatic service can be produced
at three-fourths of a cent per call
with one-half million telephones.
Manual service now costs nearly
three cents per call to produce in
Chicago, according to the statement
of the Chicago telephone engineers.
Automatic service is now being
produced in smaller towns at less
than one-half cent per call, where
cost items are only one-fourth less
than Chicago. Remember that the
larger the automatic plant and the
larger the volume of calls the cheaper
the service per call.
Automatic exchanges are like-water-power
electric plants. They
run all the time and the service is
always ready because they are a
machine. Manual exchanges are like
steam plants. They have to be oper
ated by manual labor, but there is
this difference in a steam plant
steam does the driving, while the
young women do the driving in a
manual telephone exchange, and
they must be there watching for our
calls and disconnect signals all the
