SECOND OFFICER TELLS OF THE
BRAVERY OF FIVE MEN
New York, Oct. 15. How five of
the crew of the burned liner Volturno
risked their lives in 4he very face of'
death when Captain 'Inch, denied
boats in his dire extremity by the
other liners surrounding his furnace"
ship, called for volunteers, was told
by Second Officer Edward Lloyd,
when the Grosser Kurferst, with 105
rescued aboard, docked.
Captain Inch had wirelessed to ttie
Carmania, the Kurf uerst and the oth
er boats which lay in a circle around
the blazing Volturno: "My God, we
can't stand this long. Our boats are
gone. Send boats." The liners flash
ed back that they could not risk their
boats in 'such a sea.
"We'll show them," Captain Inch
said, and called for volunteers. Five
men made the trip to the Kurfuerst.
While four men rowed in a battle
with the terrific waves, Lloyd kept
flashing the light of a little pocket
electric to show the watchers on he
surrounding ships that the boat was
Almost exhausted, they reached
the Kurfuerst's side and the last man
was drawn up as the boat went down.
But they had shown that a boat could
live even in that sea and their task
HUERTA'S LATEST ACT BRINGS
CRISIS TO MEXICAN DEAL
Washington, Oct. 15. President
.Huerta's latest act in assuming dic
tatorship in Mexico has caused a cris

disapproval of his action. Recog
nition of the constitutionalists now
fighting Huerta government in north
ern Mexico and the granting to them
of permission to import munitions of

ered by the administration.
Administration officials took pains
to emphasize" today that the ap
proaching crisis is'ndt a military one.
The administration does not consider
intervention, unless Huerta's coup
results in a wholesale slaughter of

understand, that several of the pow
ers which hastened, to recognize
Huerta' soon after he stepped into the
presidency over the body of Madero,
are now considering formal revoca
tion of that act This might quickly
precipitate Huerta's downfall by clos
ing most of the world's money mar
kets to him.
