IS CHICAGO TELEPHONE COMPANY
VIOLATING THE CHILD LABOR LAW?
City Telephone Supervisor Ferry Begins Probe After
Citizens Call Attention to Young Girls Working
in Exchanges Says Automatic 'Phone Co,
, Has Violated Franchise With New
'Phone Attachment,
City Telephone Supervisor Mon
tague Ferry has begun an Investiga
tion into the ages of telephone oper
ators employed by the Chicago Tele
phone Company.
Mr. Ferry-has received several let
ters -from citizens of Chicago calling
attention to the young children seen
trudging td and from 'the various
telephone exchanges., Acting on this
information he has started his inves
tigators to work. -
The child labor law allows a girl
fourteen, years old to work eight
hours a 'day. These eight hours must
be put in between seven, in the-morning
and.seven in theveveningj .
Some of the letters indicate that
young girls are doing night -work. If
this ,is discovered true the - Illinois
state factory inspector, Oscar F. Nel
son, will immediately start in on the
telephone magnates.
This is about the first time an in
vestigation of the Chicago Telephone
Company has been started. A' probe
was promised when the company was
sending carloads of girls to Boston
and St: Louis to act as strikebreakers
during the trouble between the oper
ators and the bosses in th'dse cities.
Thisjs not the only thing Ferry
has found, wrong with the present
telephone situation. More proof of
the slipshod manner in which the
Illinois Tunnel Cojnpaliy has been
.,
